“Yumi & The Apocalypse”: SOS Explores Grace in Endings

The band weaves in old, familiar sounds with new, experimental styles in the lead-up to their second LP, ‘It Was A Moment’

Indie alternative band SOS delves into the bittersweet nature of endings with their latest single, “Yumi & The Apocalypse”, the lead track from their highly anticipated sophomore album, It Was A Moment, set for release on March 28.

Blending nostalgic influences with bold, experimental production, “Yumi & The Apocalypse” highlights SOS’s signature storytelling—deeply personal yet universally resonant. The track navigates the emotions of a breakup with a sense of acceptance rather than resentment. As the band puts it, “It’s with less spite and more grace.”

Originally crafted with a different chorus by vocalist Roberto Seña, the song evolved through standout rearrangements by Ram Alonzo (keys) and King Puentespina (drums & synths) while still retaining its original production elements. Adding a unique texture to the track, Kiddo Cosio—owner of the beloved El Union coffee shop and roastery—lends his talents on trumpet.

While the song stays true to SOS’s signature mix of emotive guitars and melancholic vocals, it reflects the band’s ever-evolving artistry. They embrace inspiration from diverse sources without catering to mainstream pop trends, instead focusing on authenticity. “It was rewarding hearing the music come together. It always is,” they share. “A lot of artists are too focused on making a pop hit, but sometimes you just want to let some angst out. We’re here to tell stories—if it lands, it lands.”

“Yumi & The Apocalypse” arrives as SOS gears up for their second full-length album, It Was A Moment, following their critically acclaimed 2017 debut, Whatever That Was. This marks their first LP since Alonzo officially joined the band in 2023, promising a fresh yet familiar sound that fans have come to love.
