President and CEO Masaaki Tsuruoka

En Tsumugi, a new venture owned by the Hung family, marks a significant step forward in responsible vehicle recycling in the Philippines. The family, also behind local metal recycling companies Supreme Mile Trading Corp. (SMTC) and CoroCrown Corporation, launched En Tsumugi as part of a pilot project led by Japanese ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) dismantler Tsuruoka Co., Ltd., with financial backing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Major Japanese companies, including Toyota Motor Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., provided essential business development and technical expertise.

The establishment of En Tsumugi is a groundbreaking achievement in the Philippine automotive industry’s efforts to manage ELVs responsibly. Designed to handle various car brands, the facility sets a new standard for local recycling practices while promoting environmental sustainability through the integration of international best practices and expertise.

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), through its local unit, played a crucial role in providing technical support to En Tsumugi. This support covers key areas such as environmental compliance, facility design, dismantling techniques, equipment specifications, and hazardous waste management. Additionally, TMP donated five ELVs, including a hybrid electric vehicle, to serve as training units, helping to further develop the facility’s operational capabilities.

Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project

“The creation of a local ELV dismantler aligns with the goals of the ‘Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project,’ which aims to build a global network of proper ELV dismantling facilities,” said TMP President Masando Hashimoto during En Tsumugi’s inauguration in Pampanga. This project addresses the environmental impact of ELVs, including pollution and resource depletion, by promoting safe dismantling and recycling processes, which also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

During the event, TMP awarded En Tsumugi a Certificate of Gratitude, recognizing it as the fourth ELV dismantler in Southeast Asia to receive this endorsement, joining facilities in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

Toyota’s Global 100 Dismantlers Project is part of the company’s larger initiative, the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which was launched in 2015 to promote the creation of a recycling-based society and system.
