TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia 2024: Malaysia’s Taj Izrin Aiman Triumphs in Exciting Showdown

Indonesian Andika Rama comes in second in the Individual Championship, Team Indonesia comes in first place in the Country Championship

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) GT Cup Asia 2024 reached an exhilarating climax as 15 elite e-Motorsports racers competed at the Connexion Conference and Event Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Racers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand participated in three thrilling races on world-class circuits, all striving for the title of Asia Champion and a chance to represent the region at the TGR GT Cup Global Finals in Amsterdam this December.

Taj Izrin Aiman from Malaysia emerged victorious as the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024 Individual Champion, amassing a total of 65 points through a series of gripping races. He was closely followed by Andika Rama from Indonesia, the 2023 Individual Champion, who finished with 57 points. In third place was fellow Indonesian Moreno Pratama, who made his mark at the Asia finals with 48 points. Indonesia’s consistent performance throughout the competition also earned them the coveted Country Championship title.

The races were conducted on Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation®5 (PS5®) and PlayStation®4 (PS4®), showcasing a blend of strategic skill, precision driving, and daring maneuvers. Fans enjoyed an unforgettable showdown on iconic tracks, including Sardegna Windmills, Nürburgring Grand Prix (GP), and Fuji International Speedway.

“The heart of Toyota and the GAZOO Racing GT Cup Asia is about fostering a community rooted in the Japanese practice of Kaizen, or Continuous Improvement. In this fifth edition, it’s inspiring to see the enthusiasm from our drivers and supporters, as well as the technological advancements in e-Motorsports,” said Jaja Ishibashi, General Manager of Toyota Motor Asia (TMA). “Congratulations to all racers for their outstanding performances today, and best of luck to Aiman and Rama as they advance to the Global Finals!”

Panat Leelavansuk, TMA General Manager for Vehicle Design Engineering, noted, “From mastering iconic tracks to integrating insights from real motorsports, the skill level displayed by all participants is impressive. With the support of Razer’s headsets this year, racers were able to communicate with their teams effectively. I’m thrilled to see the passion and dedication of today’s youth, who are shaping the future of e-sports.”

Three Thrilling Races Define the 2024 Regional Finals

The competition kicked off under sunny skies on the Sardegna Windmills circuit, the TGR GT Asia Cup’s first-ever rally track. Drivers took control of the GR Yaris, with Rama quickly establishing an early lead, facing minimal competition before ultimately winning the first race. Mid-race, intense battles unfolded among drivers from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, with the final timings of all drivers separated by less than half a minute.

The second race took place at the Nürburgring GP, featuring drivers in the GR Corolla Morizo Edition ’22, with a reverse grid for the top eight finishers from the first race. Pratama capitalized on this opportunity, climbing from eighth place to maintain a top-three position throughout the circuit and winning the race. Malaysia’s team strategy also shone through, securing second and third places, while rain added an extra layer of challenge to the track.

In the final showdown at the technically demanding Fuji International Speedway, racers had their strategies tested to the limit. Driving the GR010 Hybrid ’21, Pratama fiercely contended for fourth place against Malaysia’s Iqbal Suji, ultimately making a decisive move in the final laps. Aiman, opting for a soft tire strategy while many competitors chose mediums, maintained his lead and clinched victory through a well-timed pit stop.

“I’m truly at a loss for words. Although I faced technical difficulties last year, my dedication and training have paid off with this victory at the TGR GT Cup Asia 2024,” said a visibly emotional Aiman. “I’m excited to continue training with Andika Rama as we prepare for the Global Cup in Amsterdam. Thank you to Toyota Motor Asia for this incredible opportunity!”

“I’m honored to represent Asia again this year! Competing against Taj Aiman was a real challenge—he’s an exceptional competitor. I pushed myself to the limit, but his consistency and strategy across all three races were unmatched. I’m excited to have him as a teammate as we gear up for the Global Finals and can’t wait to make Asia proud,” remarked Rama, returning to represent Asia for the second time.

Special awards recognized exceptional performances, with Aiman earning Driver of the Day, the Philippines’ Russel Reyes taking home Best Racecraft, and Rama winning Fastest Race Pace.

The TGR GT Cup Asia Finals 2024 welcomed Razer Inc. as its official headset partner, equipping racers with wired Razer BlackShark V2 X e-sports headsets to ensure seamless communication with their teams.

The championship was determined by cumulative points from finishing positions across all three races, the first five positions in qualifying rounds, and bonus points for the fastest laps. The top three individuals and teams each received cash prizes of USD 8,000, USD 4,500, and USD 3,000, respectively. With their victories secured, Aiman and Rama will represent Asia at the TGR GT Cup Global Finals on December 6 in Amsterdam, where they will face the world’s best e-Motorsports racers.
