The young recording star teams up with acclaimed producer Brian Lotho on the stripped-down cover of an ‘80s classic
Filipino singer-songwriter Syd Hartha continues to enchant audiences of all ages with her latest single, “Panalangin,” a fresh take on Apo Hiking Society’s iconic hit from the early ’80s.
Syd offers a new interpretation of the classic with a stripped-down arrangement and a tender touch, adding her unique flair while preserving the song’s timeless charm. “Panalangin” has become a favorite in Syd’s live performances. “It holds a special place in my heart, reminding me of cherished memories I want to keep forever,” she shares.
Describing her version, Syd notes, “I’ve always considered ‘Panalangin’ one of the sweetest and most enduring OPM songs. The original has an upbeat, pop vibe, but I wanted to infuse it with a more mellow, feminine perspective—something softer and more introspective.”
The track was arranged and produced by Brian Lotho of Sonic State Audio, with whom Syd has built a strong collaborative relationship over the past five years.
Syd reveals her approach to reimagining songs, aiming to balance her acoustic guitar-driven style with the original melody’s essence. “Apo Hiking Society’s songs, especially ‘When I Met You’ and ‘Panalangin,’ have always been on my ‘songs-I-wish-were-written-for-me’ list. When I was learning guitar, OPM songs like these really resonated with me. It’s an honor to cover a song as beautiful as ‘Panalangin.’”
Syd Hartha’s “Panalangin” is now available on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
