For many Filipino adults, wines, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages are staples of social gatherings, adding a festive touch to birthdays, weddings, fiestas, and holiday parties. The simple act of clinking glasses often strengthens bonds and creates cherished memories.
As the Philippines welcomes the festive “Ber” months, celebrations such as the Masskara Festival, Pintaflores Festival, Giant Lantern Festival, and Higantes Festival take center stage. These lively events often call for quick alcohol purchases, but convenience should never come at the expense of safety.
The Growing Concern Over Illicit Alcohol
Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Observatory 2022 reveals that 31% of alcoholic beverages consumed in the Philippines in 2019 were unrecorded, with the majority classified as illicit. In Metro Manila alone, 50% of counterfeit spirits in the country are concentrated, according to the Alliance Against Counterfeit Spirits (AACS).
“As the busiest time of the year for social gatherings approaches, it’s crucial for consumers to prioritize safety by choosing authentic alcohol products,” said David Francis, Managing Director of AACS. “Illicit alcohol poses serious health risks, and we urge everyone to make mindful decisions when purchasing and consuming alcohol.”
Counterfeit alcohol not only poses health risks but also impacts the economy, with unrecorded alcohol costing the government up to PHP40 billion (USD 700 million) annually in lost tax revenue.
The Risks of Counterfeit Alcohol
Illicit alcohol can contain harmful substances such as methanol, which can cause severe health issues, including poisoning. These products are often made in unsanitary conditions and may include unregulated ingredients like unsafe flavorings and colorings.
Beyond personal health, counterfeit alcohol contributes to organized crime, including forced labor and human trafficking, and undermines legitimate businesses.
A Campaign for Safety
To combat the dangers of counterfeit alcohol, AACS, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific International Spirits and Wines Alliance (APISWA) and the Alcoholic Beverages Alliance of the Philippines (ABAPI), has launched the “Drink Authentic, Enjoy Responsibly” campaign. This initiative promotes safe alcohol consumption and emphasizes the importance of buying authentic products, particularly as online alcohol sales grow through marketplaces and messaging platforms.
“Consumers can make safer choices by following a few simple steps,” added Francis. “Purchase only from reputable sellers, compare prices with those in supermarkets, carefully inspect packaging, and use recognized payment methods to avoid counterfeit products. Safety should always come first.”
Community Vigilance is Key
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) encourages consumers to report suspected counterfeit alcohol to authorities.
“Consumers play a vital role in combating illicit alcohol,” said IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba. “By staying vigilant and making informed choices, we can protect Filipino celebrations and ensure safer communities.”
A Call for Mindful Celebrations
As Filipinos gather to celebrate life’s special moments, the importance of remaining informed and vigilant has never been greater. Choosing authentic alcohol ensures a safe drinking experience while supporting the fight against counterfeit products that harm both individuals and the economy.
This festive season, let’s raise a glass to mindful choices and meaningful celebrations, knowing that safety and authenticity are at the heart of every toast.
Consumers can disclose any information of suspected counterfeit products by contacting the IPOPHL at operations@ipophil.gov.ph or 0966 769 1448.
