An epic series seven years in the making, today’s trailer gives audiences an exciting preview of what to expect from this legendary story launching September 13 on Disney+
As the Disney+ exclusive debut of the Japanese anime “Phoenix: Eden17” on September 13 draws near, fans were treated to an exciting sneak peek today. This preview included the unveiling of fresh key art and a tantalizing first-look trailer.
Adapted from the groundbreaking work of Osamu Tezuka, the revered “God of Manga,” “Phoenix: Eden17” promises to whisk viewers away on an interstellar journey. Join Romi and her partner George as they escape Earth, seeking a fresh start on Eden17. The allure of a utopian future beckons, but they soon confront a harsh reality upon arrival—a barren wilderness incapable of sustaining human life. Stranded without a way back and with Romi’s revelation of her pregnancy, they have no option but to strive for survival. They labor to secure water and cultivate fields in their battle against nature’s unforgiving grip. Just as a glimmer of hope begins to emerge, tragedy strikes, and George meets his demise in a tragic accident. Left alone with her child, Cain, Romi takes refuge in a hibernation pod, promising her son that she’ll awaken in 13 years to ensure he doesn’t face eternal solitude. Yet, an unforeseen malfunction catapults Romi’s awakening to 1,300 years into the future on Eden17.
Romi awakens in a futuristic utopia, where she’s treated like royalty by the inhabitants. Despite the lavish treatment, she grapples with an overwhelming sense of loneliness. Consumed by a longing for something more, Romi resolves to return to Earth, defying the widespread belief that the planet has vanished from existence.
The anime features an ensemble cast with notable voices, including Rie Miyazawa as Romi, Yosuke Kubozuka as George, Honoka Yoshida as Com, Shintaro Asanuma as Makimura, Ryohei Kimura as the older voice of Cain, and Issey Oagata as Zudarban, a space merchant. “Phoenix: Eden17” is directed by Shojiro Nishimi and produced by STUDIO4℃. The character design is crafted by the chief animation director Tatsuzou Nishita, while Shinji Kimura oversees the art direction. The music is composed by the renowned Takatsugu Muramatsu.
Shintaro Asanuma, discussing his role in the upcoming series, expressed his excitement, saying, “My first encounter with the Phoenix story was at the age of 11. I delved into the original manga and was utterly captivated by its grand scope. Now, 36 years later, I am thrilled to be part of Osamu Tezuka’s legacy and to share it with audiences worldwide. Collaborating with such an exceptional cast is beyond my wildest dreams. As a fan, I eagerly anticipate the first animated rendition of ‘Phoenix: Nostalgia.'”
Actor Ryohei Kimura added, “The Phoenix story is a legendary title that transcends the boundaries of traditional anime fandom. I can hardly wait for this Phoenix series to take flight and enchant audiences worldwide.”
