During its annual host community forum (HCF), SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet (SNAP-Benguet) reinforced its dedication to advancing a sustainable future. The forum, themed “Creating a Sustainable Energy Future: The Impact of Climate Change on Hydropower and Our Communities,” took place on October 12, 2023, in Barangay Tuding, Itogon, Benguet.
In his keynote address, SNAP Group President and CEO Joseph Yu delved into the implications of climate change on hydropower companies. He emphasized the company’s commitment to offering sustainable and equitable solutions that mitigate the effects of climate change and pave the way for a brighter future for communities.
“We continue to harness new technologies, such as enhanced weather and inflow forecasting, to optimize the operation of our hydropower plants. Additionally, we are in the process of developing other renewable energy (RE) sources, including solar power, and RE-complementary technologies such as battery energy storage systems,” stated Yu.
This year’s HCF drew approximately 60 participants from local government units and indigenous people’s organizations (IPO).
Hon. Norberto Pacio, a member of the Itogon Sangguniang Bayan and the chairperson of the Tinongdan Indigenous Peoples Organization (TINPO), expressed gratitude to SNAP for its support to the community.
“Through various projects, SNAP has played a crucial role in providing assistance to Itogon and IP groups. They have offered educational scholarships, livelihood projects, and various forms of support that have greatly benefited our communities,” he remarked.
Over the past 15 years, the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community investment initiatives have contributed to 480 projects valued at around PhP198 million. These initiatives encompass educational, health, and livelihood support, in addition to investments in cultural and heritage preservation, infrastructure, and environmental endeavors.
In 2022, the company reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by integrating it into its core strategies. They also initiated an avifauna assessment along the Ambuklao-Binga watershed to bolster conservation efforts. To date, the company has planted 201,115 seedlings across 165 hectares, exemplifying its dedication to renewable energy solutions and proactive measures for biodiversity preservation.
“Addressing the challenges of climate change goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to the progress of our communities; I look forward to collaborating with you to shape a sustainable energy future,” Yu expressed.
