While QCinema is dedicated to showcasing the latest and most captivating films of the year, the festival also recognizes the importance of paying homage to cinematic gems of the past. Consequently, each year, the festival curates a selection of its favorite classic films, especially those that have undergone recent digital restoration, making them available for festival-goers.
This year’s lineup includes a double feature of Wong Kar-wai’s masterpieces: the mirror image narratives of “Chungking Express” and “Fallen Angels.” “Chungking Express” explores the solitude of Hong Kong in the daylight, while “Fallen Angels” delves into the shadows of the night, investigating how that same isolation can lead to more sinister outcomes. Originally conceived as a single film, these two pieces complement each other, offering a comprehensive depiction of Hong Kong in the 1990s.
For those seeking a departure from themes of loneliness and despair, the festival offers a very different cinematic experience with a classic from legendary martial artist Bruce Lee. A meticulously restored version of Robert Clouse’s “Enter the Dragon” places Lee in the midst of a high-stakes fighting tournament organized by a crime lord. The 1973 film is widely regarded as one of the most influential action films of all time, blending elements from kung fu, spy movies, and the blaxploitation genre to create an exciting and distinctive cinematic concoction.
Lastly, the lineup includes a work from one of cinema’s true masters, Stanley Kubrick. His 1971 film “A Clockwork Orange” remains one of his most provocative and controversial creations. Based on Anthony Burgess’s novel of the same name, Kubrick’s film challenges the very concept of societal goodness as it follows the journey of Alex, a young delinquent subjected to behavioral therapy at the behest of a nation seeking to control his impulses. “A Clockwork Orange” received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
All these films will be presented in stunning 4K resolution.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience these meticulously restored classics at the QCinema International Film Festival, taking place from November 17 to 26 at various cinemas including Gateway Mall, Robinsons Magnolia, UP Town Center, Shangri-la Plaza, and Power Plant Mall.
