The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), the country’s premier music ensemble, begins the new year with the fourth concert of its milestone 40th season, titled “Europa.” The performance takes place on January 17, 2025, at 7:30 PM, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City.
A Night of European Masterpieces Featuring Aylen Pritchin
The highlight of PPO’s Concert IV: Europa is a performance by renowned violinist Aylen Pritchin, celebrated for his versatility with both period and modern instruments. Pritchin will showcase the timeless beauty of European classical music, performing works by Zoltán Kodály, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Antonín Dvořák.
Under the baton of PPO’s music director and principal conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, the concert will open with Kodály’s “Dances of Galánta,” a vibrant tribute to the composer’s Hungarian roots. Composed in 1933, this folk-inspired masterpiece reflects Kodály’s ethnographic expertise and musical ingenuity, taking audiences on a melodic journey to Hungary.
Pritchin will then take center stage to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35. Initially dismissed as “unplayable,” this work has since become a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, known for its majestic Canzonetta and heartfelt homage to Russian musical traditions.
The evening concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88, a radiant celebration of nature’s beauty. Inspired by the serene landscapes around the composer’s countryside home in Vysoká, this symphony brims with Czech-inspired melodies and vibrant thematic ideas. Dvořák completed the work in just 18 days, premiering it in 1890 during his induction into the Czech Academy of Science, Literature, and the Arts.
