On July 27, Smart Omega Empress (OMGE) made history by dethroning Team Vitality (VIT) to claim the MLBB Women’s Invitational (MWI) 2024 title. This victory marks the first time a Filipino team has won a tournament at the Esports World Cup. OMGE delivered a stunning clean sweep against their Indonesian rivals in the Best-Of-Five (BO5) Grand Finals, ending Team Vitality’s impressive 24-match winning streak that dated back to 2021.
Along with the prestigious title, OMGE took home USD 180,000 from the USD 500,000 prize pool, the largest ever in women’s esports. Sheen “Shinoa” Perez was named the Finals Most Valuable Player (FMVP) and received an additional USD 50,000 for her outstanding performance.
The MWI is the premier MLBB esports tournament for women athletes, aiming to provide a platform for female players to pursue their esports ambitions. The 2024 edition of MWI was held at the Amazon Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking the first time the tournament was hosted outside of Southeast Asia as part of the inaugural Esports World Cup. The event brought together 12 international teams from around the globe.
Smart Omega Empress, led by Coach Salman “KingSalman” Macarambon, is composed of Gold Laner Sheen “Shinoa” Perez, Jungler Kaye “Keishi” Alpuerto, Mid Laner Rica “Amoree” Amores, EXP Laner Gwyneth “Ayanami” Diagon, and Roamer Mery Christine “Meraaay” Vivero.
During the post-match press conference, OMGE Roamer Mery Christine “Meraaay” Vivero expressed her pride: “We want to give honor to our country. I hope we made our kababayans (countrymen) proud, including those who went to the venue to support us. It feels like a dream for all of us. We would like to take our hats off to Team Vitality, who gave us a good fight. We can now call ourselves world champions.”
She also shared an inspiring message for aspiring female MLBB players: “Continue what you’re doing, especially if it is something that you love. We started from scratch, always almost losing every time, but we continued playing because we felt like this is something we love.”
Smart Omega Empress’ victory at the Esports World Cup signifies a new chapter in women’s esports, inspiring future generations of female gamers to pursue their passions and achieve greatness.
The third edition of the MWI shattered its previous viewership record, with the MWI 2024 Grand Finals reaching 265,117 Peak Concurrent Viewers (PCV), as reported by Esports Charts. This surpasses the previous record of 179,024 PCV set during MWI 2023.
“The MWI 2024 has reached impressive viewership milestones for mobile women’s esports. The presence of the Indonesian team in the final and the substantial prize pool, one of the largest in women’s esports history, significantly contributed to this achievement. It’s now among the top three most viewed mobile women’s esports events, alongside the 32nd SEA Games and MWI 2022, highlighting the rapid growth and rising interest in women’s competitive gaming,” said Artyom Odintsov, Co-Founder and CEO of Esports Charts.
Ray Ng, Head of Esports Ecosystem at MOONTON Games, added, “The competitive women’s esports scene has made a significant leap forward with MWI 2024. We believe esports is for everyone, so we’re thrilled to have provided the world’s best female athletes with the stage and #TimeToShine. We also extend our gratitude to all our fans who filled the Amazon Arena with their cheers.”
