Studies reveal that in the Philippines, one patient is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) every six seconds. In 2016 alone, over 120,000 cases were recorded, though many remained undiagnosed due to a lack of awareness and public information. Alarmingly, early onset cases—affecting individuals as young as 40 to 45 years old—are rising, despite the disease typically manifesting around age 65. By the time many patients seek medical help, their condition is already at a mid-level severity.
To combat this growing health concern, Bereber Sayaw PD offers a unique approach to care and therapy. Established in 2019 by Novy Bereber—a Filipino-Australian choreographer, director, and Pilates instructor—Bereber Sayaw PD brings hope and joy to Parkinson’s patients through dance. Novy, renowned for his work with major dance companies such as Ballet Philippines and Ballet Manila, found his calling when he came across a job listing for a Parkinson’s dance teacher. After specialized training in Australia and New York, he developed Bereber Sayaw PD, an art-based supportive program designed to uplift patients.
Dance Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease
The program uses chair-based dance movements targeting the spine, upper limbs, hands, and lower extremities. Beyond improving mobility, these exercises stimulate creativity, imagination, cognitive skills, and emotional expression.
“It’s time to break the misconception that Parkinson’s limits life entirely,” Novy explained. “Through dance, we can help individuals rediscover joy, stay active, and reach their full potential regardless of age or circumstance.”
Advocacy and Support
The advocacy officially launched at the Manila Marriott Hotel, supported by creative agency Brand Worx, led by its President, Nikky Nicandro. “Our campaign emphasizes that while Parkinson’s may affect mobility, it cannot break the human spirit. Through dance, we create an environment where everyone can experience its transformative power,” said Nicandro.
With the help of partners like Manila Marriott Hotel, composer Tere Filipinia, and the Iloilo Bereber Dance Theater Company, Bereber Sayaw PD aims to become a nationally recognized foundation. Its goal is to support underserved Parkinson’s communities in the Philippines and across Asia, fostering a care ecosystem that connects patients, carers, benefactors, medical professionals, and local government units.
Bereber Sayaw PD continues to grow, bringing the healing power of dance to those affected by Parkinson’s Disease, one step at a time.
