Award-winning singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated fifth studio album, Not That Girl, set to debut on Friday, January 10, 2025, across all major digital platforms worldwide.
This album marks a deeply personal chapter in Almalbis’ career, as she delves into her journey with mental and emotional health through music. The tracks explore themes of healing, resilience, and self-discovery, aiming to break the silence surrounding the stigma of depression.
To celebrate the release, Almalbis will perform live at an exclusive event on the same day at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati City. The intimate gathering will feature a long setlist, blending fan-favorite hits with new songs from Not That Girl. The evening will also showcase performances by notable Filipino musicians, including Kai del Rio, .bird, Twin Lobster, and Johnoy Danao.
Ahead of the album launch, Almalbis shared a heartfelt Instagram post, reflecting on her battle with depression and the importance of community and creativity in her healing process. “But through it all, I was never really alone. I had the support of people who prayed for me, listened to me, loved me, and continually reminded me to remain in God. Their presence was a lifeline,” she wrote. She credited her friends for encouraging her to write, reigniting a passion for songwriting that began in her teenage years. “The songs came so naturally, almost effortlessly. It felt like I was reconnecting with something deep within me.”
Almalbis also spoke about collaborating with producer Nick Lazaro, who played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Not That Girl. Initially intending to create just one song, the project grew into a full album within months. “Finishing it felt like closing a chapter, but also the start of something new. This past year has been challenging, but I’ve realized the pruning I experienced had a purpose. I’m learning, growing, and trusting in the new chapter God has planned,” she shared.
The album’s pre-release singles, including “Desperate Hours,” “Homeostasis,” and “Happy Sad,” offer a glimpse of Almalbis’ evolving artistry. While showcasing a playful, experimental approach, these tracks maintain the emotional depth and authenticity that define her music.
