Inspired by his recent journey to his homeland, Filipino-American rap artist MBNel has dropped his latest single “JUST LIKE YOU” via the US label EMPIRE (known for artists like Tyga, Fireboy DML, Tink, Amber Liu, Alextbh, and Afgan).
In this fresh release, MBNel showcases his artistry with a distinctive beat and candid lyrics that vividly capture the essence of life in Manila for the Filipino populace. The proud Fil-American rapper delves into the everyday realities of the urban landscape in the Philippines through the song’s official video, filmed amidst the slums and old railways of Manila. Here, MBNel can be seen mingling with locals and children, offering a heartfelt homage to his heritage.
The music video for “JUST LIKE YOU” provides a raw portrayal of the challenges faced by Filipinos living below the poverty line, yet resiliently persevering through each day with a spirit of resilience and optimism—a characteristic trait synonymous with Filipinos worldwide. Rather than showcasing the country’s picturesque locales, MBNel deliberately chose to spotlight this aspect of the Philippines, aligning with the song’s theme of confronting one’s shortcomings without reservation.
With poignant lyrics like “It’s crazy I be praying, but I sin too,” MBNel embraces his unmistakable Filipino identity, openly acknowledging his flaws while maintaining a deep sense of spirituality—a rarity in the rap genre. Lines such as “You broken (tryin’ to) heal too” convey empathy towards his Pinoy fans, underscoring the universality of human struggles. The rapper’s candid admission, “I know you damaged, well baby me too,” further reinforces the message of solidarity with his audience.
Reflecting on his intent behind the song, MBNel shares, “I’m trying to show that I share some of the same problems that some of my fans might be going through or have been through. This video demonstrates that we are not that different regardless of fame, money, or whatever.”
Expressing his affection for his roots, MBNel adds, “I loved coming back to visit the Philippines; my culture is something I’d love to keep learning about and now I want to come back and stay longer.”
“JUST LIKE YOU” is now available on all major digital streaming platforms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in MBNel’s introspective journey.
