The violinist-singer/songwriter expresses cultural adjustments in sophisticated jazz-pop number
London-based Filipino indie-pop artist Muri has released “Afternoon,” the first official single from her upcoming debut EP. The track explores the challenges of adapting to life in a new and unfamiliar place, a struggle Muri has faced since moving to Europe to pursue her music career.
“I was constantly comparing here and home, which created this sometimes dark cloud of bitterness, desolation, and frustration, without really realizing that that was an unhealthy thing to do,” shares Muri, the violinist-singer from the Philippine indie-folk band The Ransom Collective. “It really takes a lot out of you, until you realize you can redefine your own reality. ‘Afternoon’ is about that journey, both the dark and the good that come from embracing change. It’s about missing something or someone from home, and learning to appreciate what’s in front of you, which can shift your entire perspective.”
Muri wrote “Afternoon” and collaborated with rising French producer Sacha Arnaud, whom she connected with over coffee in Paris after seeing a video of his performance online. “It was an interesting process because it was our first time working together,” Muri explains. “The process mirrored my nomadic life, with us exchanging files remotely between France and Italy, and holding in-person sessions in Paris and the countryside outside of Lyon. We worked on this song in at least four different locations.”
“Afternoon” features Muri’s confessional songwriting, set against soothing soundscapes and lush melodies, showcasing a more vulnerable side of her music. The soul-infused, jazzy pop tune reflects her bouts of uncertainty as she navigates her place in an ever-expanding world.
The Awit Award-nominee reveals, “It feels like I’m opening my world to listeners: who I am from the Philippines, and who I’ve become in Europe. It’s about shedding old identities and discovering new perspectives. This song captures a moment in time, reflecting my raw feelings and thoughts. It’s written more from the heart than the mind.”
Muri’s “Afternoon” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.
