The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the City Government of Muntinlupa have unveiled a Rapid Composting Machine and Materials Recovery Storage Facility at the Alabang Central Market, marking a significant milestone in sustainable waste management for the city and the Metro Manila region.
The event featured the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and Deed of Donation (DOD) between MMDA General Manager Usec. Procopio G. Lipana and Muntinlupa City Mayor Rozzano Rufino B. Biazon. The agreement outlines the shared responsibilities of both parties in implementing the On-Site Solid Waste Management Processing and Recovery System. This system converts biodegradable market waste into nutrient-rich compost, reducing landfill waste and advancing environmental sustainability.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando S. Artes emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “This facility exemplifies what can be achieved when local governments and agencies like MMDA unite to address the need for innovative waste management solutions. The Rapid Composting Machine will not only reduce waste in Muntinlupa but also serve as a model for other cities in promoting a circular economy and sustainability.”
Mayor Biazon echoed this sentiment, emphasizing individual responsibility in environmental care. “Environmental care and solid waste management are responsibilities of every individual—no one is exempt because we all contribute. Mismanaged waste returns to us as risks to our daily lives. We urge everyone to advocate for environmental protection through responsible waste management,” he said.
The Materials Recovery Storage Facility further enhances Muntinlupa’s solid waste management efforts by streamlining waste sorting and storage. It also supports the city’s broader sustainability agenda, encouraging residents to adopt greener practices and fostering a cleaner environment.
Promoting Circular Economy Solutions
The Rapid Composting Machine processes biodegradable waste into compost for agricultural and urban greening projects, aligning with the MMDA’s goals of waste circularity and sustainability. This initiative complements the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP) by reducing landfill-bound waste and mitigating urban flooding.
The facility is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar waste recovery systems across Metro Manila, driving sustainable practices and environmental awareness. Moving forward, the MMDA and the Muntinlupa City Government will monitor and evaluate the facility’s performance, with plans to replicate its success in other areas. Through this project, Muntinlupa takes a significant step toward urban sustainability and a greener future.
