The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has officially partnered with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to actively participate in the government’s nationwide campaign against the illicit drug trade.
Through a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU), Meralco solidifies its involvement in the “Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan” (BIDA) program, which aims to reduce both the supply and demand for illegal drugs.
Under the terms of the MOU, Meralco has committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace by implementing regular and random drug testing among its employees. The company will also organize orientations and seminars to educate its staff about the physical, social, and psychological consequences of narcotics. Furthermore, Meralco will actively promote the BIDA campaign to raise public awareness about the detrimental effects of illegal drugs.
BIDA, a comprehensive six-year advocacy program initiated by the DILG, adopts a holistic approach, involving the entire government and the nation, to combat the widespread proliferation of drugs in the country.
During his speech, DILG Secretary Atty. Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos Jr. emphasized the significance of private sector involvement in the BIDA program, highlighting their pivotal role in ensuring the overall success of the anti-drug campaign.
In response, Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, Joe R. Zaldarriaga, stated, “At Meralco, we highly value our stakeholders and are dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for our employees. This commitment is reflected in our policies and programs that uphold a drug-free workplace.”
Zaldarriaga further added, “Through our strong partnership with the DILG and our participation in the BIDA program, we reiterate our commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to promote human and social development and to continuously educate Filipinos about the harmful effects of illegal drugs.”
In addition to Meralco, other companies under the leadership of Manuel V. Pangilinan, including PLDT-Smart, Maynilad, and Metro Pacific Tollways, have also pledged their support to the BIDA campaign.
“We eagerly anticipate the continuation of this worthy endeavor with the DILG, as we collectively address the pressing issue of drug abuse. We are fully dedicated to utilizing all available resources to support the BIDA campaign,” concluded Zaldarriaga.
