Welcoming the new year with an enchanting evening, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) shines a spotlight on the brilliance of master composers Johannes Brahms and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky in its “Fate” concert on January 12, 2024, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati.
As part of its 39th concert season, themed “Switch,” the PPO will perform Brahms’s Piano Concerto no. 1, op. 15, D minor, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 4, op.36, F minor, under the direction of PPO music director Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.
Tchaikovsky’s featured masterpiece, known as “Fatum” (Fate), is a powerful composition reflecting the emotional struggles of the composer. With a recurring distinctive motif, the symphony delves into the theme of fate, showcasing Tchaikovsky’s orchestration and lyrical richness that contribute to the enduring appeal of the piece.
For the fifth concert in the series, pianist Jerome Rose will perform Brahms’s masterpiece, characterized by a melancholic melody floating atop a gently rocking accompaniment reminiscent of flowing river water. The composition documents Brahms’s challenging years involving the influential composer and pianist Robert Schumann and his spouse, Clara.
Regarded as one of the most renowned pianists in America and hailed as “the Last Romantic of his generation,” Rose initiated his international career in his 20s. A gold medalist in the International Busoni Competition, Rose’s extensive career is marked by critical recordings on Medici Classics, encompassing a wide range of repertoire from Liszt and Schumann to Beethoven and Chopin.
The PPO, as the country’s leading orchestra, has not only premiered Filipino compositions but has also featured works by foreign composers not previously performed in the Philippines. In its commitment to promoting music appreciation, the PPO plans outreach concerts in Iloilo on January 19 and in Capiz on January 21, extending the joy of music to different communities.
