Fortinet®, a global leader in cybersecurity driving the convergence of networking and security, has partnered with Manila Central University (MCU) through its Academic Partner Program. This collaboration, formalized via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fortinet’s distributor MEC Networks Corporation and partner Sapient Technology, seeks to address the cybersecurity talent shortage in the Philippines by preparing the next generation of professionals in the field.

As part of the partnership, MCU will incorporate Fortinet’s Network Security Expert (NSE) training and certification program into its curriculum, either as integrated coursework or standalone offerings. Faculty members will also have access to advanced cybersecurity training. These programs focus on critical areas such as network security, web security, malware analysis, and defense strategies, equipping students with industry-recognized certifications and the expertise required to excel as cybersecurity professionals.

MCU students will benefit from guest lectures by Fortinet experts and specialized training conducted by Fortinet-certified instructors. These sessions will include hands-on exercises, case studies, and practical applications designed to meet real-world industry demands. Additionally, Fortinet and MCU will collaborate on establishing a Cyber Innovation Lab, providing students with immersive, state-of-the-art learning experiences.

The significance of this initiative is underscored by Fortinet’s Cybersecurity Skills Gap 2024 Global Research Report, which revealed that 94% of organizations in the Philippines experienced at least one security breach in 2023. Of these breaches, 77% were partially attributed to a lack of cybersecurity skills, while 84% of organizations reported challenges in finding candidates with essential technology-focused certifications.

MCU joins nine other universities and institutions in the Philippines participating in Fortinet’s Academic Partner Program, including Our Lady of Fatima University, Mindanao State University-Sulu, Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong, Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, Central Philippines State University, Bulacan Agricultural State College, Holy Angel University, Systems Plus College, and Mapúa University.

MCU President Dr. Renato C. Tanchoco Jr. emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Providing comprehensive cybersecurity training and certifications has always been part of our vision at MCU. With the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, this collaboration with Fortinet is crucial for our students and the wider community. Through Fortinet’s expertise, we aim to equip future cybersecurity professionals with the knowledge and skills to combat these challenges. This marks a significant milestone in building technical capabilities and digital intelligence across our academic community.”

Alan Reyes, Fortinet Philippines’ Country Manager, added, “Fortinet is committed to addressing the cybersecurity talent shortage, a critical factor contributing to security breaches as highlighted in our recent report. By collaborating with institutions like MCU, we aim to develop a skilled workforce capable of closing this gap and fostering a safer digital ecosystem. Together, we can empower the next generation to effectively protect organizations and communities from evolving cyber threats.”
