Celebrating the count-down to New Year is one of the most awaited celebrations second to Christmas in the Philippines. It’s customary for Filipinos to gather for the “Media Noche”, the feast after welcoming the New Year with a bang with fireworks.
Alternatively, a lot of Filipino families and group of friends choose to go out and celebrate to welcome the New Year outside their homes. The affluent celebrate it in hotels or out of town resorts costing thousands of pesos per head.
Here are some of my suggestions on how to welcome the New Year 2014 with a bang without denting your pocket too much.
Eastwood City New Year Countdown
Eastwood City has been one of the best place to celebrate New Year with style.
This year, Jessica Sanchez, International singing sensation and American Idol Season 11 runner-up, and Bamboo will be leading the Eastwood City New Year Countdown to 2014. Other pinoy stars that will perform includes South border, Mitoy Yonting & Draybers, Up Dharma Down and DJ Ace Ramos.
Event starts at 6 p.m. at the Eastwood Mall Open Park.Catch the grand fireworks display and dazzling star drop, Eastwood City’s version of New York’Times Square’s Ball Drop at 12 midnight.
Entrance Fee (Optional): Just purchase New Year memorabilia or glowstick (that will be used at the simultaneous symbolic raising later at the event). Proceeds will go to the recent disaster relief efforts.

Manila’s Salubong 2014 countdown ng Masa sa Divisoria
If you are a resident of Manila or nearby, the City of Manila will be holding a new year countdown at Divisoria on December 31 at 6 p.m.
The highlight of the event is a competition of musical bands and a 15-minute fireworks display.
“Salubong 2014 countdown ng Masa sa Divisoria” aims to showcase Mayor Joseph Estrada’s efforts in bringing order to the busy and almost chaotic busy district.
Winners of the band competition and the “Divisoria Got Talent” contests will receive prizes. There will be also a raffle of prizes for the audience.
The event will also have food trucks, photo booths, face painters, mascots and mimes.
Showbiz personalities were also invited to the event as well as the Manila City Band who will serenade the audience with selected popular music.
Other yearly count downs like Makati have been cancelled in sympathy with the recent calamity victims so options are less this year. Nevertheless, these are the options that I know that are still continuing the tradition and some of them for a cause like Eastwoods event.
Enjoy this New Year without too much spending with these ideas with family and friends. I suggest you head to the venues earlier and plan the whole night as a big outing. Stay safe and enjoy!
Wazzup Philippines wishes everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! May you all have a bountiful, healthy and happy 2014.
