Love in the Digital Age: MONA’s Debut EP

The 5-track release captures the essence of love in varied forms

Filipino recording artist MONA has officially unveiled her highly anticipated debut EP, Love, MONA, now available via Sony Music Entertainment. The 5-track collection serves as a heartfelt compilation of love letters transformed into songs. Inspired by the tradition of exchanging handwritten letters in the ’90s, MONA brings a sense of nostalgia and personal expression to her storytelling.

“I was born in the ’90s and experienced the charm of handwritten letters. I kind of miss it,” shares MONA, whose real name is Mona Gonzales. “Nowadays, people rarely do that because we live in a digital world where everything is online.”

At its core, Love, MONA explores love in its various forms—platonic, romantic, and self-love—while doubling as a coming-of-age record. It reflects on love’s transformative power, how it shapes identities, and influences the stories we share.

“I want listeners to connect with the songs and find ones that resonate with them,” MONA explains. “Each track represents a different emotional experience—whether it’s the thrill of new love, nostalgia, curiosity, caution, or self-discovery. I hope to take listeners on a journey of heartfelt moments, vulnerability, and growth, all wrapped in catchy melodies and relatable lyrics.”

Musically, the EP highlights MONA’s versatility, positioning her as an artist capable of effortlessly navigating multiple genres and influences.

“Tayo Na Ba” stands out with its playful and dynamic vocal delivery, blending retro-futuristic production and early 2000s R&B, while maintaining a modern OPM (Original Pilipino Music) vibe.
“Lapit Sa Akin” and “Boy From The ’90s,” both produced by Peter Lamiel, showcase MONA’s range. The former channels influences from J-pop legend Utada Hikaru and early Robyn, while the latter offers infectious melodies paired with a summery, feel-good chorus reminiscent of a vibrant era.

A standout moment in the EP, “Luntiang Mundo,” takes a reflective turn, embracing life’s unique journeys and finding joy in simplicity. Produced by South Korean producer J2, the track pairs MONA’s guitar-driven pop sensibilities with dreamy, eclectic flair, resulting in a smooth, nostalgic vibe.
“Sandstorm,” produced by Jaxzmusic, infuses city-pop influences with groovy beats, funky instrumentation, and confident rhythms, creating a fresh and magnetic energy.

With Love, MONA now available, the rising P-Pop star looks forward to continuing her musical journey and exploring new styles. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m doing what I love and enjoying it,” she shares. “My goal is to be recognized as a singer and songwriter. I’m ready for whatever this path may bring.”

As her debut EP, Love, MONA marks an exciting new chapter for MONA, whose unique voice and genre-blending sound are already making waves in the music scene. With her dedication to creating music that resonates deeply, MONA is undoubtedly a rising star to watch.

MONA’s new album, ‘Love, MONA’ is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
