Lenovo Empowers Filipino PWDs and Women, Giving Back to Communities and the Environment

The leading PC maker takes action against employment inequality and education disparity through digital inclusion in the Philippine market.

In line with the positive findings from its 18th annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, Lenovo Philippines is on a roll, championing inclusion in the workplace and implementing proactive initiatives to enhance community well-being while minimizing environmental impact. From increasing participation of women and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in technology to engaging in volunteerism during the Lenovo Month of Service last September, Lenovo is unwavering in its sustainability mission.

This year’s report highlights the global technology leader’s progress towards its 2030 emissions reduction goals, greater involvement in the circular economy, exceptional representation of women in technical roles, increased employee volunteerism, and responsible governance of artificial intelligence (AI) as it aims to be the premier provider and enabler of smarter AI.

“With the inevitable advancement of artificial intelligence, we are ensuring our customers are equipped for the future,” said Michael Ngan, President and General Manager of Lenovo Philippines, Inc. “While we enhance the lives of Lenovo users with AI technologies, we are equally committed to managing our environmental impact and advancing our advocacy for tech literacy and equal employment opportunities.”

Increasing Women and PWD Participation in Technology

Lenovo’s local initiatives, particularly its Women in Lenovo Leadership employee resource group, have achieved 20% female executive representation through targeted training and mentorship programs. Currently, women make up 61% of Lenovo Philippines’ workforce, showcasing significant female representation in the industry.

In partnership with Ashoka, Lenovo collaborates with changemaker Ryan Gersava and the Davao-based NGO Virtualahan to help individuals with disabilities acquire essential digital skills for in-demand jobs.

Lenovo aims to enhance diversity, inclusion, and access to technology both internally and externally, reporting a 29% representation of women in technical roles this year. The company is focused on further diversifying its executive ranks, targeting 27% female representation globally and 35% representation of historically excluded talent in the U.S. by FY2025/26.

“Diversity and inclusion are central to our mission in the Philippines. By fostering a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, we are better equipped to innovate and meet the needs of our customers. We remain dedicated to creating opportunities for everyone, including women and individuals with disabilities, to thrive in the tech industry and contribute to national growth,” added Michael Ngan.

Reducing Environmental Impact

The report also reveals Lenovo’s increased engagement in the circular economy, focusing on sustainable materials and responsible product disposal. Since 2017, Lenovo has nearly increased its reuse and recycling of products by 40% through its product take-back programs, having reused or recycled over 94,000 metric tons of products through Product End-of-Life Management (PELM) initiatives since 2020—equivalent to the weight of 87 million ThinkPads.

Global Month of Service Initiatives

For the Philippines market, Lenovo employees conducted STEM activities for students at Better World Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila, on September 20, 2024. During this event, students learned about meal preparation and composting while receiving water filtration kits. Lenovo also organized a storytelling activity that included a library book donation and toy drive. On October 4, sessions on nutrition, cooking, and candle-making were held, further sharing insights on meal preparation.

These initiatives underscore Lenovo’s commitment to driving positive change. Through its vision of Smarter Technology for All, Lenovo is building a brighter and more sustainable future for its customers, employees, communities, and the planet. Through various community-focused programs, Lenovo has made a global philanthropic impact of USD $21 million (approximately PHP 1.18 billion).
