Kiko Pangilinan on ‘Toni Talks’: Dreams, Love, and a Senate Comeback

In a candid interview on Toni Talks, former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan shared rare insights into his life, from childhood dreams of becoming an astronaut to his love story with megastar Sharon Cuneta and his aspirations for a 2025 Senate return.

From Space Dreams to Public Service

Long before politics and showbiz, a six-year-old Kiko dreamed of becoming an astronaut. “I watched the Apollo moon landings and was hooked. I told myself, ‘One day, I’m going to be an astronaut,'” he recalled.

But as he grew older, his passion shifted from reaching the stars to serving people. “I realized that while I couldn’t go to the moon, I could make a difference here on Earth,” he said, crediting his parents for instilling values of service and integrity. His father, a civil engineer and entrepreneur, and his mother, a devoted public-school teacher, both played active roles in their community. “My dad taught me perseverance and love for country, while my mom showed me the power of compassion and prayer. That shaped my journey into public service.”

From Political Setback to Finding Love

Kiko’s political career began as a Quezon City councilor while he was studying law at UP. However, his first major political bid—a run for a congressional seat—ended in defeat. “It was painful. I felt like my dreams were crushed,” he admitted.

But life had other plans. ABS-CBN invited him to co-host the legal talk show Hoy Gising!, which led him to cross paths with Sharon Cuneta. “She was a guest promoting a movie, and I was completely starstruck,” he laughed. “I thought, ‘Do I even have a chance?'”

Through persistence and humor, he won her over. “I lost in politics, but I won in love. That’s the best plot twist of my life.”

The Vice Presidential Bid and an Unfinished Mission

Initially set on seeking reelection in the Senate in 2022, Kiko changed course when former Vice President Leni Robredo asked him to be her running mate. “She called me two days before I was set to file. It was a tough decision, but I believed in her vision for the country.”

Though they didn’t win, Kiko remains steadfast. “Leadership isn’t just about winning; it’s about standing up for what you believe in. I learned so much from that journey.”

Championing Farmers’ Rights

One of the most emotional moments in the interview came when Kiko spoke about his advocacy for farmers. “I never thought agriculture would become my focus,” he admitted. “But when a typhoon wiped out my farm, I experienced firsthand what farmers go through. It changed me.”

Since then, he has championed agricultural reforms, emphasizing food security and justice for farmers. “Their struggle became my fight.”

A 2025 Senate Comeback

As the 2025 elections approach, Kiko is eager to return to the Senate. “I’ve served with integrity—no corruption, no scandal. I believe in good governance, and I think the Filipino people want leaders they can trust.”

When asked about his return to politics, he responded with optimism. “I still have dreams for this country. I want to fight for farmers, improve education, and push for better governance.”

A Story Still Unfolding

As the interview wrapped up, Toni asked, “Do you still dream about becoming an astronaut?”

Kiko chuckled. “Not anymore. My feet are firmly on the ground… but my head is still in the stars.”

With integrity, purpose, and his family’s unwavering support, Kiko Pangilinan is ready for the next chapter. And as 2025 draws near, his story is far from over.
