Kenshi Yonezu’s ‘Azalea’ Featured in Netflix’s ‘Beyond Goodbye’

Global J-pop sensation Kenshi Yonezu continues to captivate audiences with his latest release, “Azalea,” the theme song for Netflix’s new global series, Beyond Goodbye. Directed by Yuka Yamaguchi, the music video features Yonezu in a serene, pre-dawn cityscape, blending his artistry with the series’ poignant themes.

A Song of Love and Farewell

Beyond Goodbye premiered on November 14, 2024, and has already garnered global attention. Reflecting the journey of the series’ protagonist Saeko, “Azalea” delves into the emotional turmoil of losing one’s greatest love and the bittersweet hope found in cherished memories. The song embodies resilience, offering comfort in the enduring impact of love and loss.

The series has also made history as the first Japanese production featured in the Onscreen Category at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival, which highlights exceptional streaming content. Helmed by director Hiroshi Kurosaki and written by Yoshikazu Okada, the drama marks a reunion for the creative duo, who previously collaborated on the NHK serial Hiyokko.

Yonezu Reflects on Azalea

Speaking about the song, Yonezu shared:

Beyond Goodbye opens with the extraordinary scenario of Saeko meeting the person who received her late fiancé’s heart. Though such encounters are rare, the story holds a universal message that resonates deeply. While creating ‘Azalea,’ I reflected on Saeko’s inner struggle—her uncertainty about whether to stay connected to or distance herself from her fiancé’s memory. I hope this song speaks to everyone who listens.”

A Tale of Love, Loss, and Fate

Written by the acclaimed Yoshikazu Okada (The 8-Year Engagement, The Last 10 Years), Beyond Goodbye is a heart-rending romance starring Kasumi Arimura (We Made a Beautiful Bouquet, Call Me Chihiro) and Kentaro Sakaguchi (The Last 10 Years).

The series follows Saeko (Arimura), who tragically loses her fiancé, Yusuke, in an accident on the day of his proposal. After Yusuke’s heart is transplanted to Naruse (Sakaguchi), the two are drawn together by destiny. As they meet, memories of Yusuke begin to stir within Naruse, creating a profound connection.

Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Hokkaido and Hawaii, Beyond Goodbye explores the enduring power of love and the intersection of heartbreak and destiny.
