Singapore solo artist JENE and Dark-pop producer DSML released their first collaboration, “buttercup”
Inspired by Joe Goldberg’s psychopathic tendencies in a Netflix series “You”, buttercup seeks to explore the lengths a person can go for an obsession and is written from the perspective of an obsessed stalker.
The song’s lyrics progress with intensity–from the simple act of people-watching to the eventual kidnapping–there is nothing short of creepy and exciting.
Traditionally known as a weed, the buttercup is a beautiful, yet toxic yellow flower that symbolises joy and playfulness. In this case, what started out as plain curiosity quickly turns into an obsession as the victim “weeds” into the stalker’s mind and “poisons” them (ironically). The victim sparks joy in the stalker, and the stalker plays with the unwitting victim through planned run-ins and masked friendliness.
“buttercup” is out on Spotify, Apple Music, deezer and other popular platforms.
About JENE
JENE (the last “e” is silent!) is an aspiring singer-songwriter who started taking an interest in music production after binging videos from YouTubers Andrew Huang and OCEAN. Her influences span a myriad of genres, in particular, pop and EDM. Currently at the stage of experimentation, JENE hopes to deliver pieces inspired by both life and the arts through her honest and direct lyrics, merging the mundaneness of everyday living with shows she loves.
About DSML
Singapore-based Dark-Pop producer David Siow aka DSML emerged into the scene in May 2020, as a way of expressing his personal trauma in the form of music production. Whilst still fulfilling his duties in award-winning indie-pop band M1LDL1FE, DSML infuses his tracks with his own brand of dark emotions and production choices.
Deemed an “accomplished soundscaper” by Mixmag Asia, he has already racked up 220,000 plays in his 8 month career, including collaborations with Malaysian indie-pop band Son of A Policeman, Indonesian indie-anthem rock band lightcraft, as well as Singaporeans GIN.GIRL, Falling Feathers, Jean Seizure, and Goose.
Think of DSML’s as 70% dark chocolate – not for everyone but oh so smooth and velvety.
