On the opening day of the Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 this December 25, 2024, I got invited and was excited to watch the movie “Isang Himala” as my first movie among the great selection of movies in this year’s MMFF. I have seen the classic Himala movie already a couple of times.
Watching “Isang Himala” was an immersive and emotionally resonant experience for me.
This musical drama, a poignant retelling of the 1982 classic, tackles timeless themes of faith, desperation, opportunism, and the search for truth in a way that deeply resonates with audiences today.
The movie is a reimagined masterpiece by the acclaimed director Pepe Diokno who also directed last year’s MMFF film GomBurZa. This movie musical was based on the original 1982 multi-awarded movie “HImala” written by National Artist Ricky Lee that was turned in the a theater musical in 2003 by Ricky Lee and Vince de Hesus. Pepe watched the Isang Himala theater musical during its 2022-23 run. He fell in love with it and asked Ricky Lee the permission to turn it into a movie. Ricky Lee agreed and told Pepe to own his own version of it, and do it faithfully and unfaithfully to the original.
A Tale as Relevant Today as Ever
In a world grappling with poverty, inequality, and the spread of misinformation, “Isang Himala” serves as a chilling reflection of our own times even though the original story was written during the 80s. The film masterfully explores the dangers of blind faith and the complexities of belief, prompting viewers to question their own understanding of truth and hope. This does not only apply to people’s religious beliefs but also relevant to our political bias. In desperate times and desire for change and looking for solutions, we look for saviours / heroes who can do some “miracles” for us and our country making us blindly follow our “saviours”.
“Walang himala! Ang himala ay nasa puso ng tao, nasa puso nating lahat! Tayo ang gumagawa ng mga himala!
As the iconic line of the original movie delivered by Nora Aunor, there were no miracles. There will be no magic solutions to our problems. The solution is in our “hearts”. We will be the one who will provide the “miracle” required to solve our problems.
A Symphony of Sight and Sound
This is a visually stunning film, boasting impressive production design by Ericson Navarro who was part of the set production during the previous runs of the theater musical. With two indoor sets build for this movie on two soundstages, a whole mining town and an open hill top, the production design with intricate sets, gave the mix of theater and film ambiances that gave this movie a unique backdrop.
With the breathtaking cinematography of Carlo Canlas Mendoza and the musical direction of Vincent de Jesus, the musical elevated the storytelling experience.
Vincent score seamlessly weaves into the narrative, adding layers of emotion and deepening our connection to the characters and their struggles. The musical numbers are not merely interludes; they are integral to the storytelling, offering profound insights into the characters’ inner worlds and the evolving dynamics within the community.
A Stellar Cast Delivering Powerful Performances
The ensemble cast, comprised of theater veterans, delivers raw and emotionally charged performances both in singing and acting:
Aicelle Santos as Elsa
Aicelle Santos shines as Elsa, capturing the character’s vulnerability and unwavering conviction with remarkable depth. Elsa, a young woman from the drought-stricken mining village of Baryo Cupang, claims to have been visited by the Blessed Virgin and granted the power to heal. Her journey is a complex one, grappling with faith, doubt, and the immense pressure of fulfilling the hopes of her community. Her powerful vocals in the musical numbers further amplify her character’s inner turmoil and the weight of her newfound responsibility. Her years of experience in both local and the international theater scene made her very qualified for this demanding role.
Bituin Escalante as Aling Saling
Bituin Escalante portrays Aling Saling, Elsa’s mother. Escalante delivers a chilling performance, capturing the character’s concern and anxiety for Elsa with her powerful singing and great acting.
Neomi Gonzales as Chayong and especially Kakki Teodoro as Nimia, played and sang their roles very well.
David Ezra as Orly the filmmaker who wants to document Elsa’s story was fabulous in this very critical role.
These are just a few of the exceptional performances that bring the story of “Isang Himala” to life. Since all the cast and hundreds of extras were from the theater community who support the movie, nothing could be fault in the performances and singing of the entire cast.

I would recommend this movie if you are any of these:
- someone who already watched the original 1982 movie: This movie tells the story better with the music and with the additional lines especially from the viewpoint of Elsa
- someone who already watched the theater musical: The big screen movie experience with the intricate set designs and the cinematic angles with the powerful performance of the cast and their singing in hi fidelity and the soundscape in Dolby Atmos
- someone who wants to enjoy watching an intelligent movie that is timeless but loves dramas
- someone who loves musical movies like Wicked
