Ronnie Lee’s “Natatanging Nilalang” is a tribute to people with Down Syndrome, celebrating the unique qualities that make them special. Lee, who has a nephew with Down Syndrome, wrote the song to empower those with the condition and their families.
The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) has been advocating for the empowerment of people with Down Syndrome and their families since it was founded in 1991. One of its initiatives is the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, held in partnership with SM Cares.
The Happy Walk for Down Syndrome is an annual event that brings together people with Down Syndrome and their loved ones for a day of fun activities and entertainment. Held every February to coincide with National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month, the event aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of the condition.
Engr. Bien C. Mateo, SM Supermalls Senior Vice President and SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs, said that the event is all about giving a voice to those with Down Syndrome and their families, so that people can learn more about their experiences and how to make life better for them.
After a three-year hiatus, DSAPI and SM Cares are holding a physical version of the event on February 26 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City. Activities at the event include the Happy Walk Parade, the ShowDOWN segment where people with Down Syndrome can showcase their talents, and various fun activities at booths within the venue.
Those interested in joining the event can register through DSAPI’s official Facebook page or register on-site on the day of the event at the SM Employees Booth at the Mall of Asia Music Hall from 7:30AM.
SM Cares is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, with programs that support communities, promote social inclusion, and care for the environment. In addition to its initiatives for people with disabilities, SM Cares also advocates for the environment, women and breastfeeding mothers, children and youth, senior citizens, and cycling.
