A groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for October 26, 2023, marks the official commencement of construction for the new Philippine Film Heritage Building in Intramuros, Manila, through a tripartite agreement involving the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
Last September 26, DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, FDCP Chairman and CEO Tirso Cruz III, and TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid, all agency heads, signed the inter-agency memorandum greenlighting the building’s construction.
Chairman Cruz expressed, “This Tripartite Agreement between our esteemed agencies is a testament to our collective dedication to safeguard and nurture our beloved Philippine Film Heritage.”
This historic agreement signifies a significant stride towards the preservation and presentation of the rich cultural heritage of Philippine cinema. It underscores the unwavering commitment of the involved government agencies to foster the development of the country’s film and tourism sectors.
Designed as a state-of-the-art facility, the forthcoming building will serve as a melting pot for cinematic treasures, housing a collection of Filipino films, memorabilia, and cutting-edge audiovisual preservation and restoration facilities.
Chairman Cruz added, “Our facilities will serve as a hub for film enthusiasts, a source of deep and rich knowledge for students, and a treasure trove of Philippine cinema for both our fellow citizens and visitors from all around the world.”
The DOT stated that the building is poised to become a prominent attraction within the historic walled city of Intramuros, offering visitors an immersive journey through the evolution of Philippine cinema.
The construction of the Philippine Film Heritage Building is part of the government’s broader efforts to boost tourism and cultural appreciation in the country. It is anticipated to be completed by October 2024.
Chairman Cruz expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all those who supported the establishment of a permanent home for the Philippine Film Heritage, especially Senator Robin Padilla, the main proponent of the monumental project. He said, “This feat will not be possible without your support. We send our gratitude to you all.”
Once standing, the Philippine Film Heritage Building will house the Cinematheque Centre Manila and the Philippine Film Archive, serving as the new headquarters for the FDCP.
