In the midst of the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), Globe, a leading digital solutions platform, addressed the imperative need for ethical practices and human oversight over this technology in an enlightening discussion with students at the recent Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM) Career and Internship Fair.
Dennis Abella, Vice President for Operations Systems Support (OSS) Program Delivery at Globe, highlighted how education in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEM) can equip students for future careers where AI integration is increasingly indispensable.
While AI fosters creativity, innovation, and enhances critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, Abella emphasized the importance of comprehending its ethical and societal implications.
“AI is potent, but it still relies on human common sense to make sound decisions. It cannot discern beyond its programmed capabilities. Thus, responsible digital citizenship is crucial, ensuring informed, ethical decisions regarding technology use and its societal impact,” stated Abella during his talk titled “AI Unleashed.”
Globe is currently exploring AI’s applications in various facets of its operations, including customer service and the automation of digital channels. These endeavors are aimed at mitigating risks in areas such as security, compliance, and ethics.
“AI systems inherently lack moral reasoning and comprehension of intricate social norms. Hence, human oversight is imperative to ensure AI operates within ethical boundaries and prevents potential misuse that could result in harm,” he added.
The partnership between Globe and Mapúa MCM underscores a shared commitment to advancing technological education while emphasizing the significance of human oversight in AI.
“This collaboration with Globe provides our students with invaluable insights into the practical and ethical dimensions of AI. It helps equip our students with the skills and perspective needed to succeed in a tech-driven world,” remarked Leopoldo Aquino, Jr., Director of the Office of Corporate Partnership and Alumni Affairs at Mapúa MCM.
Meanwhile, Engr. Alejandro H. Ballado, Jr., Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of Mapúa MCM, underscored the Career and Internship Fair’s role in bridging the gap between academic preparation and industry expectations.
“The Mapúa MCM Career and Internship Fair, supported by Globe, is more than just a job fair. It’s a platform for future-proofing our students. By exposing them to industry leaders and the latest technological trends, we ensure they are ready to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy,” stated Ballado.
Globe’s collaboration with Mapúa MCM aligns with the company’s proactive efforts to partner with academic institutions nationwide, aiming to prepare future-ready students and create avenues for opportunities in the technology sector.
