Globe At Home has recently introduced fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) technology in 88 public schools, primarily in Metro Manila, establishing itself as the pioneering broadband provider to implement this state-of-the-art WiFi solution in Philippine educational institutions.
Through collaboration with local government units, the installation of Globe At Home’s FTTR marks a significant stride in digital learning, aligning with the company’s mission to elevate broadband experiences and fortify the digital infrastructure in the country. This initiative also resonates with the government’s drive for increased connectivity in educational institutions nationwide, promoting the accelerated integration of digital technology in learning.
Raymond Policarpio, Vice President and Head for Brand Management, Broadband Business at Globe, emphasized the transformative impact of FTTR technology on educational connectivity. He stated, “Empowering schools with FTTR technology is a game-changer in educational connectivity. Our aim is not just to connect schools but to transform them into hubs of digital innovation and learning excellence.”
The deployment of FTTR is a response to the prevailing lack of WiFi connectivity in many Philippine schools. As of September 2022, only 1.8% of the country’s 47,421 public schools had access to free Wi-Fi, according to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian. A study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies revealed that a mere 27% of students in rural areas have internet access, significantly lower than the 47% in urban areas.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by slow or insufficient connectivity, particularly during the pandemic’s height, Globe aims to address this issue by enhancing connectivity through FTTR powered by GFiber. This initiative ensures public school students benefit from improved internet service, facilitating seamless virtual and interactive learning experiences crucial in today’s digital age.
As part of the project, the Globe At Home team provided school staff with a comprehensive walkthrough on the advantages and capabilities of this new technology. FTTR stands out by offering speeds up to 10 times faster than traditional broadband, supporting up to 120 devices simultaneously. By extending fiber optics directly into classrooms, it overcomes challenges like dead spots and signal obstructions caused by thick concrete walls and multiple floors, ensuring rapid and seamless Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire school premises.
Globe At Home continues to lead the charge in broadband technology and digital transformation, remaining steadfast in its commitment to creating opportunities and enhancing broadband experiences for Filipinos. This dedication aligns with its vision of fostering a more connected and digitally empowered Philippines.
