GCash Partners with Zolo to Tackle Electronic Waste

Groundbreaking partnership addresses tech industry’s growing environmental challenge

GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, is excited to announce its new partnership with Zolo, a global leader in sustainable IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) solutions. This collaboration focuses on minimizing the environmental impact of electronic waste by responsibly refurbishing and reselling unused devices.

As reported by The Global e-Waste Monitor 2024, the Philippines generated 540 million kg of e-waste in 2022, with limited access to proper disposal facilities being a key contributor to the issue. E-waste has become one of the major environmental challenges of the digital age, and GCash is committed to leading efforts in reducing its carbon footprint through responsible e-waste management.

“By finding ways to extend the life of devices and embracing innovative approaches to repurpose and recycle, we’re not only reducing waste but also advocating for a sustainable economy—one where resources are reused, valued, and given new life,” said Pebbles Sy, Chief Technology and Operations Officer at GCash. “This collaboration is a testament to what like-minded organizations can achieve when we join forces to benefit the planet and our communities.”

Zolo, an Australian company with operations in the Philippines and a carbon-neutral status, is aligned with GCash’s mission of fostering a greener future. By prolonging the lifecycle of electronic devices, Zolo helps conserve resources and lessen the need for new materials, thus contributing to more sustainable practices across industries.

“It’s truly a pleasure for us to partner with GCash, especially as we continue to push the boundaries of sustainability,” said Saar Herman, Country Manager at Zolo. “Finding a partner who shares our values in the Philippines is not easy, and we’re deeply committed to bringing sustainability to businesses, communities, and industries here.”

This partnership also aligns with GCash’s GForest initiative, which has been actively promoting sustainability since its launch in 2019. Initially a reforestation project, GForest has now expanded to include agroforestry, supporting local communities and improving their livelihoods. Through this collaboration, GCash and Zolo aim to encourage other organizations to embrace sustainable practices and work together toward a healthier planet. So far, GForest has planted over 2.81 million trees, covering 11,600 hectares and providing a livelihood for 8,600 farmers.

Proceeds from GCash’s partnership with Zolo will benefit the ABS-CBN Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation and community service.

“GCash has created a movement that empowers millions of Filipinos to take meaningful actions in protecting the environment and combating climate change. Now, we’re leading a new initiative to address e-waste and extend the lifecycle of unused devices,” said CJ Alegre, Sustainability Head at GCash. “We’re not just making a difference; we’re creating a legacy. Together, we’re pioneering a sustainable revolution in fintech, where every transaction moves us closer to a greener future.”
