Gastronomic Grandeur and Timeless Elegance: A Day at Manila Hotel

Manila, a city that pulsates with a unique rhythm of history and modernity, a place where the echoes of the past mingle seamlessly with the vibrant energy of the present. For a much-needed escape from the daily grind, me and my wife embarked on a 1 day staycation at the legendary Manila Hotel, a bastion of Filipino hospitality and timeless elegance. Our itinerary was simple: immerse ourselves in the hotel’s storied ambiance, indulge in the culinary spectacle that is the Ilang-Ilang buffet, and find solace in the tranquil embrace of their pool.

A Grand Entrance: Stepping into a Living Museum

From the moment I stepped into the lobby, we were transported. The Manila Hotel, a landmark in itself, exuded an old-world charm, a blend of Filipino hospitality and classic elegance. The high ceilings, the ornate chandeliers, the impeccably dressed staff – it was a sensory immersion in a bygone era.

The check-in process was seamless, a testament to the impeccable service that the Manila Hotel is renowned for. We were escorted to our room, a sanctuary of comfort and sophistication. The room, with its tasteful décor, plush furnishings, and panoramic view of Manila Bay was a haven of tranquility. The attention to detail was evident in every aspect, from the luxurious bedding to the thoughtfully curated amenities.

Room Tour

Our room was spacious with a queen bed. There is a TV and a working desk.

The toilet was spacious with both a shower and a bath tub. Bathroom supplies were adequate and good quality.

There was even a welcome fruit “basket”.

Poolside Bliss: A Moment of Respite

Before embarking on our culinary adventure, I sought refuge in the hotel’s pool area, a hidden gem tucked away amidst lush greenery. The pool, a shimmering expanse of blue turquoise water, beckoned me to unwind and escape the city’s heat. The atmosphere was serene, a perfect antidote to the urban bustle.

I settled into a comfortable lounger, the gentle rustling of palm leaves providing a soothing soundtrack. The pool staff, attentive yet unobtrusive, ensured I had everything I needed, from fresh towels to refreshing beverages at the pool-side bar. We spent a blissful hour basking in the sun, taking leisurely dips in the cool water, and simply enjoying the moment. The pool experience was a testament to the Manila Hotel’s commitment to providing a holistic and rejuvenating experience for its guests.

A Culinary Spectacle: The Ilang-Ilang Buffet Unveiled

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Ilang-Ilang buffet, a culinary destination in its own right. It is one of the famous buffets in Manila. The restaurant, a sprawling space adorned with elegant décor, was abuzz with activity. That day we visited was a busy day for the resto with them having around 400 guests. The air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of diverse cuisines, a symphony of flavors that promised a gastronomic adventure.

The Ilang-Ilang buffet is not merely a meal; it’s an immersive culinary journey. The restaurant is divided into distinct sections, each dedicated to a specific cuisine, from Filipino, Korean and Italian to Japanese, Chinese, and South Asian. I embarked on a culinary exploration, sampling dishes from each station, each a masterpiece of culinary artistry.

  • The Seafood Station: A treasure trove of oceanic delights, featuring fresh oysters, succulent prawns, delicious crabs and perfectly grilled fish.
  • The Japanese Station: A testament to the artistry of Japanese cuisine, with meticulously crafted sushi and sashimi. Don’t forget of course their popular tempura station which is always busy but never runs out of my favorite tempura prawns!
  • The Filipino Station: A celebration of local flavors, showcasing classic dishes like lechon, flavorful humba, and savory kare-kare to name a few.
  • The Indian Station: A fragrant journey through the subcontinent, with aromatic curries, tandoori specialties, and freshly baked naan. They even have Indian desserts like the gulab jamun!
  • The Dessert Station: A sweet ending to the culinary adventure, with an array of delectable desserts, from local delicacies to international pastries. Bibingka & puto-bumbong, crepes, halu-halo, ice cream, and pinoy kakanins are some of my favorites.

The sheer variety and quality of the food were astounding. Each dish was prepared with meticulous attention to detail, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff ensuring that every guest’s needs were met.
