Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco marked a significant milestone in Sulu as she led the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Patikul on Wednesday, September 18.
“I am deeply grateful to return and fulfill a promise, ensuring that under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration and the vision of Bagong Pilipinas, no one will be left behind in our nation’s development,” Secretary Frasco remarked.
The new TRA, strategically located near the Provincial Capitol, is designed to boost economic opportunities and inspire the aspirations of the local community. It will be equipped with essential facilities like restrooms, information desks, and a pasalubong center to promote local products and craftsmanship.
“What makes Sulu unique is its rich cultural heritage, from the centuries-old Pis Siyabit weaving to the distinct culinary traditions of the Tausug people. These elements make Sulu a standout destination for both local and international tourists,” Frasco highlighted.
Secretary Frasco’s visit comes after her initial trip to Sulu in February, where she saw the province’s readiness for tourism growth. She expressed confidence that Sulu’s development could serve as a model for other provinces across the country.
DOT, Sulu Government, and TIEZA Seal Partnership for TRA Development
Following the groundbreaking, Secretary Frasco formalized the collaboration for the TRA’s construction by signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the provincial government of Sulu, the Municipality of Patikul, and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
“This Tourist Rest Area is a testament to the Marcos administration’s dedication to supporting the economic growth of your province,” Frasco noted, emphasizing that sustainable tourism can uplift communities and foster cultural exchange.
The MOA defines the roles of each party in building, managing, and maintaining the TRA, ensuring long-term sustainability through a cooperative effort between DOT, TIEZA, and local authorities.
Governor Abdusakur Tan, Patikul Mayor Kabir Hayudini, and TIEZA’s Assistant Chief Operating Officer Jetro Lozada joined Secretary Frasco in the signing, with DOT Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar and Sulu Vice Governor Abdusakur “Toto” Tan II witnessing the event.
Acknowledging the province’s unique needs and respecting religious practices, the Patikul TRA will include a Musalla, a prayer room for Muslim travelers. In addition, the TRA will incorporate eco-friendly features like solar panels and a rainwater catchment system.
Tourism as a Driver for Economic Growth
Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, who accompanied the Tourism Secretary on her second visit to Sulu, expressed his support for the project, highlighting tourism’s potential to create jobs and drive regional economic growth. He assured that the House of Representatives would continue backing the DOT’s infrastructure initiatives to enhance the tourism sector nationwide.
Governor Tan also expressed his appreciation for the continuous support of the Frasco couple, noting that developments like the TRA will further enhance Sulu’s tourism potential while preserving its cultural heritage.
Promoting Tausug Creativity at Bangsa Sug Day
Before the groundbreaking, Secretary Frasco attended the 643rd Bangsa Sug Day Anniversary in Maimbung, where she praised the artistry of the Tausug people during the Pis Siyabit fashion show.
In her speech, she reiterated the DOT’s initiatives to promote Halal tourism, an emerging sector in Sulu and across the country. Frasco emphasized that Halal tourism is a key avenue for cultural preservation and economic growth, further bolstered by the recent launch of the Marhaba area for Muslim travelers and the first Halal Tourism and Trade Expo.
The Pis Siyabit showcase featured local designers from Sulu’s 19 municipalities, each presenting intricate textile designs. The celebration also included a pangalay dance performance, with the Municipality of Maimbung winning the top prize for creative patchwork designs, followed by Parang and Pata as runners-up.
With the Sulu TRA being the fifth in Mindanao and 15th overall, it strengthens the network of Tourist Rest Areas across the Philippines, offering both local and international tourists a glimpse of the country’s rich cultural diversity and commitment to sustainable tourism development.
