As part of the festivities for the 3rd Philippine Film Industry Month this September, celebrated under the theme “Tuloy pa rin ang Tawanan” (The Laughter Continues), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is gearing up to pay tribute to some of the Philippines’ most iconic comedians. In recognition of their immense contributions to not only the local film industry but also the nation’s cultural tapestry, FDCP will spotlight the profound significance of Philippine comedy, transcending mere entertainment value. This will be achieved through the honoring of Filipino personalities who have come to embody the essence of Pinoy comedy.
Michael V.
Over the course of his illustrious three-decade career, Beethoven Bunagan, affectionately known as “Bitoy” or Michael V., has firmly established himself as one of the Philippines’ most prolific comedians. Bitoy’s comedic genius shines brightly as one of the masterminds behind “Bubble Gang,” the country’s longest-running comedy show. Through the creation of memorable characters like “Yaya Angelina,” “Bonggang Bonggang Bongbong,” “Mr. Assimo,” and “Doña Yna Moran,” Bitoy has masterfully crafted a brand of comedy that seamlessly blends satire and social commentary, elevating it to a cultural phenomenon of its own.
Eugene Domingo
Recognized in the entertainment sphere as “Uge,” Eugene Domingo embarked on her journey as a theater luminary, collaborating with revered theater figures and National Artists such as Tony Mabesa and Ishmael Bernal. Her evolution into a celebrated film and television actress is a testament to her versatile talents.
Her impressive filmography includes her iconic portrayal in the “Kimmy Dora” franchise and her role in Marlon Rivera’s critically acclaimed work, “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,” which served as the Philippines’ official entry to the Academy Awards in 2011.
Uge’s unique ability to infuse the discipline and intricacies cultivated in the theater into the realm of television and cinema has allowed her to craft intelligent and multi-dimensional characters. Her contributions have elevated comedy beyond mere populism, establishing it as a sophisticated form of art.
Ai-Ai Delas Alas
Martina Eileen Hernandez, known by her stage name Ai-Ai Delas Alas, holds a prominent position as the Philippines’ Queen of Comedy. Her comedic prowess has catapulted her to box office stardom, notably with the “Ang Tanging Ina” franchise, helmed by the late Wenn Deramas.
Beyond her contributions to comedy in shows and films, Ai-Ai Delas Alas has demonstrated exceptional talent in dramatic roles, resulting in acclaim from numerous local and international award-giving bodies. Her accolades include the Best Actress Award at the Los Angeles Philippine International Film Festival in the USA for her performance in the drama “Area” and the PMPC Star Awards for TV Best Single Performance for her role in the drama-anthology series “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”
With over three decades in the entertainment industry, Ai-Ai’s versatility in acting spans the gamut from slapstick comedy to poignant drama, cementing her status as a versatile performer who embodies the multifaceted facets of the entertainment world on both the small and big screens.
Vice Ganda
Jose Marie Viceral, widely recognized as “Vice Ganda,” embarked on her comedy journey from performing stand-up comedy at comedy bars to ascending as one of the most coveted comedians in the nation. Her ascent to iconic status is undeniable.
With a track record of blockbuster hits, top-rated television programs, successful advertising campaigns, and sold-out concerts both domestically and internationally, Vice Ganda’s influence in the entertainment realm is indisputable. She has carved out a remarkable niche in the industry, marking a milestone that was unprecedented for a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Tito, Vic, and Joey
The enduring trio of Tito, Vic Sotto, and Joey De Leon, collectively referred to as TVJ, have consistently withstood the test of time. Over the course of more than five decades, TVJ has effortlessly navigated the shifts brought about by time, solidifying their position as the beloved “dabarkads” of the longest-running television program on GMA Network.
TVJ possesses the remarkable capacity to embody genuine Filipino humor, showcasing their skill in connecting with an ever-evolving audience within the fiercely competitive landscape of the industry.
The late Comedy King, Dolphy
The late Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon, the undisputed and irreplaceable King of Comedy, takes center stage at this year’s PFIM as the industry comes together to honor his profound contributions to the entertainment world.
Dolphy epitomized the quintessential Filipino Everyman, representing a harmonious blend of both the humorous and poignant aspects of entertainment. His comedic genius transcended generations and eras, spanning the realms of bodabil, television, and cinema.
In recognition of his enduring legacy, the late King of Comedy will be posthumously honored with the FDCP’s Highest Honors, celebrating him as a multimedia artist who embodies the pinnacle of Filipino comedy.
The Awarding Ceremony is scheduled for September 29 at Acacia Hotel Manila, coinciding with the Closing Ceremony of PFIM 2023. This grand tribute to the late King of Comedy serves as a continuation of the tradition of humor and laughter, now carried forward by the younger generation of comedians.
Through the celebration of PFIM 2023, the FDCP aims to honor the essence of Philippine Comedy—what it has meant to us in the past and its enduring significance in our lives today.
