The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) launched the 4th Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM) on September 1, 2024, with a special tribute to National Artist for Film Eddie Romero. Held at the Metropolitan Theater, the event, themed “Tuloy ang Tradisyon ng Pelikulang Pilipino” honored the lasting impact and legacy of Philippine cinema.
The month-long celebration kicked off with a free screening of Eddie Romero’s acclaimed 1980 film “Aguila,” which drew a full house. The event also featured a mini-exhibit highlighting Romero’s significant contributions to the film industry.
In his opening remarks, FDCP Chairperson and CEO Jose Javier Reyes emphasized the importance of recognizing National Artists in guiding the future of Filipino filmmaking. He stated, “By valuing the works of National Artists, we gain insight into the potential direction of Philippine cinema and the future of our next generation of filmmakers.”
Jeffrey Sonora, Vice President of FPJ Productions, discussed the restoration process of “Aguila” in partnership with the Philippine Film Archive (PFA). This effort aims to preserve Romero’s work and ensure it remains accessible to future generations.
The screening was attended by the relatives of Romero, including veteran actress and “Aguila” cast member, Chanda Romero.
The event was also attended by representatives from the Filipino Screenwriters Guild, the Film Academy of the Philippines, Aktor PH, the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film, ABS-CBN Film Restoration, the Academic Film Society, and various members of the press.
