Established to recognize young visual artists whose innovative practices push the boundaries of contemporary art, the Thirteen Artists Awards has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s creative landscape.

Now in its 54th year, the TAA began in 1970 as a curatorial project by the CCP Museum’s first curator, Roberto Chabet, with the aim of restructuring, restrengthening, and renewing artmaking and art thinking to sustain the growth of Philippine art. It was later institutionalized as a formal awards program by Raymundo Albano, then director of the CCP Museum and Non-Theater Operations.

Originally held biennially from 1970 to 1980, the TAA continued in 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1994 before taking a brief hiatus. In 2000, the program was revived and transitioned into its current triennial format, continuing to honor artists who challenge and expand artistic expression in the Philippines.
