Epson, a renowned global leader in professional printing, has announced its partnership with the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase (AFDS) to promote sustainable fashion through innovative technology.
In this collaboration, Epson has joined forces with seven local designers from Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Together, they are creating a distinctive fashion collection centered around the theme of sustainability, reflecting the cultural heritage of their respective countries. The full “Sustainability in Asia” collection will be revealed during Epson’s LFP Innovation Day in Bangkok on March 21, 2024. Leading up to this event, the designs will be showcased at Epson Solution Centers across the region.
The designers are utilizing Epson’s range of dye sublimation printers, including the SureColor SC-F6430, SureColor SC-F9430H, and SureColor SC-F10030, to produce vibrant and precise color apparel pieces for these unique collections.
Filipino designer Dave Ocampo proudly represents the Philippines in this year’s AFDS, focusing on creating ready-to-wear styles that are both wearable and timeless. He prioritizes sustainability by sourcing fabrics locally and supporting local communities, aiming to make fashion accessible to the public with sleek and classic silhouettes.
“The collection aims to showcase the beauty of the Philippines through colors, symbols, and patterns,” shared Ocampo. “It highlights the vibrant festivals, cultural symbols, and heritage patterns deeply rooted in Philippine history and identity. Partnering with Epson for digital textile printing allows us to bring these details and vibrant colors to life.”
Utilizing sublimation transfer, the design is first printed on a dye sublimation transfer media, then transferred directly onto the fabric using heat and pressure. This method results in permanent, fade-resistant prints bonded to the fabric, with vibrant colors and intricate details.
Unlike conventional printing methods that consume substantial water for fabric preparation, dyeing, and rinsing, digital textile printing with dye sublimation is more environmentally conscious. It produces less waste and minimizes over-production, allowing designers to produce printed fabric on-demand, reducing costs and environmental impact.
Moreover, digital printing provides designers with creative freedom to print anything imaginable and on-demand. This technology enables them to create complex designs, offering endless variations and options to suit their tastes.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with AFDS to raise awareness of sustainable digital textile printing through creative showcases with established and aspiring ASEAN designers,” said Masako Kusama, President of Epson Philippines Corporation. “Guided by our brand message, ‘Engineered for Good,’ Epson is committed to co-creating sustainability technology solutions that enrich our communities and address environmental issues.”
“The team of designers at AFDS is excited to participate in this unique partnership with Epson, sharing a vision for the future of fashion and technology,” added Hayden Ng, Premier Founder and Singapore Fashion Ambassador of the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase. “Each designer has ingeniously translated their unique narratives, rooted in the cultural tapestry of their respective countries, and incorporated perspectives on sustainability and zero wastage into these styles.”
