Dive into Sustainability: Century Tuna’s ‘Saving Our Seas’ Initiative

Following its successful 2023 campaign, Century Tuna, the Philippines’ leading tuna brand, reinforces its dedication to marine conservation with the second installment of its “Saving Our Seas” initiative. This year, the brand continues to spearhead efforts against plastic pollution, further establishing its commitment to protecting the country’s marine ecosystems.

Representatives and volunteers from Century Pacific Food Inc. (CPFI), Century Tuna Superbods 2024 finalists, HOPE, and the Local Government of Mabini, Batangas, gathered for the “Saving Our Seas” International Coastal Cleanup Day activity on the coast of Anilao in Batangas.

In 2024, Century Tuna broadened its impact by launching educational initiatives focused on the Plastic Circular Economy and responsible plastic waste management. The brand also led efforts to restore and protect crucial coastal regions while fostering active engagement with local communities throughout the Philippines.

“With the second year of the ‘Saving Our Seas’ campaign, Century Tuna is reinforcing its dedication to safeguarding our marine ecosystems,” stated Mr. Carlo Endaya, Vice President and General Manager of the Branded Tuna Division at Century Pacific Food Inc. (CPFI). “Our goal extends beyond cleaning the ocean; we aim to raise awareness and cultivate a mindset that emphasizes the importance of preventing plastic pollution.”

To mark International Coastal Cleanup Day, Century Tuna launched a school-based plastic recycling initiative in various elementary schools in Mabini, Batangas. Partnering with HOPE’s Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash program, the project encouraged students to gather plastic waste and exchange it for cash, while educating them about the Plastic Circular Economy. This approach ensures that collected and recycled plastics are kept out of nature, preventing them from re-entering the environment.

“The goal is to inspire people to see that picking up even a single piece of plastic not only brings extra income to their families but also plays a significant role in addressing a global issue and contributing to the cleanup efforts in the Philippines and worldwide,” said Ms. Ilusion Farias, Managing Director of HOPE.

In line with the initiative and in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Century Tuna representatives, along with finalists from Century Tuna Superbods 2024 led by Runner-up Patrick Patawaran, CPFI employees, and volunteer divers, took part in a coastal and reef cleanup in Mabini, Batangas. The team successfully collected 357 kilograms of plastic waste from both the shoreline and underwater.

Century Tuna’s award-winning “Saving Our Seas” campaign furthers its commitment to marine conservation. Last year, the campaign exceeded its original goal by collecting over 10 metric tons of plastic waste, preventing it from polluting the oceans.

CPFI employees and the Local Government of San Juan, La Union collaborated for the Century Tuna “Saving Our Seas” Earth Day Palit-Plastic Project in San Juan, La Union.

Earlier this year, the “Saving Our Seas” campaign achieved significant milestones through major events like the Earth Day Palit Plastic Project in La Union and the Superbods Cleanup Drive in Subic Bay, Zambales. These initiatives underscore Century Tuna’s commitment to combating plastic pollution while promoting awareness about the concept of a Plastic Circular Economy.
