Bad Genius, a film directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya, is showing in Philippine cinemas this week. The said movie is #1 in Cambodia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and has received recognition from film festivals the world over. It is based on a true story about a straight-A student who makes cheating extraordinarily easy and aims to level up by going international.
For the very first time, a Southeast Asian Film is chosen to open the New York Asian Film Festival where it won awards such as Best Feature and Screen International Rising Star Asia award for lead star, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying. While in the Fantasia International Film Festival, Bad Genius bagged the awards: Best Asian Feature Film, Best Film, Best Innovative Feature Film, and Best Director.
Bad Genius is also the first Thai film to receive the Fukuoka Audience Award at the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival 2017. Moreover, the movie received the Fantastic Fest award for Best Thriller Feature and got recognized at the Vancouver International and BFI London film festivals.
Hollywod Reporter says “Bad Genius scores high marks as a ceaselessly entertaining thriller,” while Variety noted, “the film is executed with that studio’s trademark technical slickness and hip style, but director also offers subtle yet stinging insight into Thailand’s class inequalities and corrupt school system.”
The multi-awarded movie will be shown in at least 7000 cinemas in China on Oct 13, in Korea on Oct 19, Australia in Oct 26 and Japan this October. Other Asian countries lined up are Hong Kong, Laos, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, , Vietnam, and Brunei.
