This April, CreaZion Studios invites Filipino audiences on an extraordinary adventure with A24’s The Legend of Ochi, the feature directorial debut of writer-director Isaiah Saxon. Produced by Jonathan Wang (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Richard Peete (Blue Ruin), and Traci Carlson (Killer Sally), the film stars Helena Zengel (News of the World, Transamazonia), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Emily Watson (Dune: Prophecy), and Willem Dafoe (Nosferatu, American Psycho).
A Tale of Friendship and Courage
The Legend of Ochi follows Yuri (Helena Zengel), a teenage girl from the isolated island of Carpathia. Raised by her fiercely militant father (Willem Dafoe), Yuri has been taught to fear and hunt the mythical creatures known as the Ochi. But when she discovers a wounded baby Ochi, alone and vulnerable, she forms an unexpected bond with the creature. Defying her father’s rules and her community’s beliefs, Yuri embarks on a daring quest to reunite the baby Ochi with its family, risking everything for a creature she was taught to fear.
A Vision Brought to Life
Saxon’s debut feature is a heartfelt exploration of love, longing, and acceptance, inspired by the unspoken bond between a child and their pet. Shot in the breathtaking Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania, Romania, the film embraces a handcrafted approach to visual storytelling. Saxon opted for practical effects over CGI, using puppetry to animate the baby Ochi and animatronic limb extensions for the adult Ochis. This commitment to practical techniques gives the film a raw, authentic charm that enhances its fantastical world. “When you do something handmade, the imperfections become charming,” Saxon reflects.
