A group of 48 scholars, funded by Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), recently graduated from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start program, specializing in the rapidly expanding field of cloud computing.
Last year, Chevron Philippines Inc., the marketer of the Caltex brand of fuel and lubricants, teamed up with Edukasyon.ph to launch a digital training initiative for underprivileged youth. This program, part of the AWS re/Start initiative, aims to equip young individuals with cloud computing skills.
Edukasyon.ph is a social enterprise leveraging online platforms to connect learners with educational opportunities and enhance career awareness. Through this collaboration, CPI supports aspiring professionals, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, by providing training in Cloud Foundations, Linux, Cloud Adoption Framework, Databases and Networking, along with essential soft skills.
For the first time, Chevron, recognized for its award-winning programs like the Caltex Mentor Program and Fuel Your School, is supporting the development of cloud computing skills.
From the 50 scholars selected by Edukasyon.ph nationwide, 48 successfully completed the program. The scholars, meeting face-to-face for the first time, celebrated their graduation after excelling in the course. Graduates now possess the technical expertise to design, manage, and optimize cloud infrastructures, which are increasingly sought after by employers.
Kymberlyn Valbuena, the top performer of the batch, exemplifies the transformative impact of accessible and inclusive education. Initially uncertain about her eligibility, she was impressed by the program’s inclusivity, structured curriculum, and hands-on training. With support from CPI and AWS re/Start, Kymberlyn overcame her doubts and emerged as the top learner.
“When I saw the program on social media, I immediately applied though I wasn’t sure if I was qualified. If you are having doubts, I would like to encourage you just to try [AWS re/Start] because it is open for everyone regardless of their background,” Kymberlyn said.
“I truly appreciate and value the program sponsored by Chevron. I did not only gain technology knowledge but also personal skills such as communicating and socializing with other people,” she added.
Raissa Bautista, Chevron’s senior corporate affairs advisor, remarked, “The AWS re/Start program is Chevron’s first social investment (SI) program in the digital sphere, and it fills us with much pride to see our dear scholars break boundaries and thrive in the field of technology. Our scholars’ unwavering resolve and talent in cloud computing will undoubtedly take them to great places. It truly goes to show how far determination and proper support can get you.”
The AWS re/Start program is offered at no cost to learners, with no prior technology background required. Upon completing the three-month training, participants validate their skills through the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification exam. Following certification, they were introduced to over 15 hiring partners who conducted job interviews.
“We believe our scholars will go places because of their talent and persistence to learn and work. Chevron looks forward to seeing these students turn from learners to professionals and use their newly developed knowledge and skills to create impactful changes in our future,” Raissa added.
Tejas Vashi, Global Leader for AWS re/Start, stated, “AWS re/Start brings ‘net-new’ talent into the workforce, establishing a win-win-win scenario for individuals to launch successful careers in cloud, organizations to increase their competitive edge with in-demand talent, and communities to thrive and grow. We are proud to work with Edukasyon.ph and Chevron Philippines Inc. to build the diverse, robust cloud workforce of the future, enabling organizations to accelerate their innovation with the AWS Cloud.”
