The song serves as the first single off her upcoming fifth album, to be released at the end of the year
After collaborating with indie-folk band Munimuni on “Tupa” and co-headlining the Mist Music Festival in Canada, Barbie Almalbis is ushering in a new musical era with the release of her latest song, “Desperate Hours.”
Produced by La Ball’s resident arranger and studio wizard Nick Lazaro, known for his exceptional work with artists like Clara Benin and BP Valenzuela, “Desperate Hours” marks the debut single from Barbie’s upcoming fifth studio album, slated for release later this year.
Drawing comparisons to avant-pop pioneers such as Bjork, Melanie Martinez, and St. Vincent, Almalbis’ latest track defies easy categorization, showcasing her most experimental work to date. Collaborating with Lazaro, they explore unconventional guitar riffs, loose structures, and captivating soundscapes, presenting an uncompromising vision that breaks away from Almalbis’ previous releases. It’s pop music in its purest form, liberated from conventions and limitations.
“I’ve dreamed of exploring this kind of sound for years but lacked the expertise and courage until I met Nick, who has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life,” the alternative rock icon shared. “The process was intense. Nick pushed me to sing with raw emotion, experiment with crow sounds, explosions, portamentos, and ‘witchy’ voices. It felt unconventional at times, but it all came together beautifully.”
Beyond its sonic audacity, “Desperate Hours” showcases Almalbis’ poignant songwriting prowess, reflecting a period of personal turmoil and spiritual introspection. Written during a challenging phase marked by anxiety and emotional upheaval, the song is a testament to resilience and faith.
“I was grappling with deep-seated anxiety and confusion, unsure of its origins. I turned to God and trusted friends for support,” Almalbis revealed. “In a moment of clarity, I penned the pre-chorus: ‘I can feel the rescuer… finally the war is over,’ a declaration of hope amidst adversity. It resonated deeply, and I later discovered parallels in Psalm 18, reinforcing my belief that I was on the right path.”
Drawing inspiration from emotional songwriters like Kate Bush and Bjork, “Desperate Hours” reveals layers of complexity that invite listeners into Almalbis’ introspective journey.
“I’m not one to meticulously plan my music; I follow my artistic curiosity and express my emotions in the moment,” Almalbis shared. “Listening to artists like Bjork and Kate Bush has influenced my approach, guiding me towards a path that feels authentic and true.”
Barbie Almalbis’ “Desperate Hours” is now available on all major digital music platforms worldwide, inviting listeners into a realm of musical innovation and emotional depth.
