Banwa Private Island Champions Biodiversity Conservation Through Art and Education

Banwa Private Island is proud to collaborate with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity in raising awareness about biodiversity conservation through art and education.

In a special one-night event, the Biodiversity in Full Color art exhibition showcased the remarkable works of Samantha Kaspar, a talented artist with special needs whose passion for nature shines through in her vibrant paintings. Her artwork depicted a diverse range of species, from colorful birds and fish to intricate corals and plants, celebrating the beauty of biodiversity.

Banwa Private Island’s commitment to conservation has been further highlighted by its recognition as one of the Philippines’ top 10 Important Shark and Ray Areas. This distinction underscores the island’s crucial role in protecting vulnerable species and their habitats. Among its many conservation initiatives, Banwa has undertaken research projects on native species such as the Tabon Bird (Philippine Megapode) and Mantanani Scops Owl, while also working to preserve the indigenous beach forests where these species nest.

Janet Oquendo, Island Manager of Banwa Private Island, remarked, “Aquos Foundation’s mission to safeguard marine ecosystems aligns perfectly with Samantha’s captivating artwork. Her paintings reflect the delicate beauty of the underwater world and serve as a powerful reminder of nature’s balance. We are honored to support her and continue our conservation efforts, which include research on native species and the preservation of vital habitats.”

In addition to the art exhibition, Banwa Private Island’s Aquos Foundation partnered with the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and World Heritage Site Management Office to host an educational event for students from Tumarbong Elementary School. The event introduced the book Mga Hero ng Planetang Blue, produced by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, which aims to inspire young readers to become environmental guardians.

The Biodiversity in Full Color art exhibit was a great success, demonstrating the power of art to connect people with nature and inspire conservation efforts. Banwa Private Island remains committed to supporting biodiversity conservation through initiatives that promote sustainable practices, art, and education.
