Apayao: Philippines’ New UNESCO Nature Haven

The Philippines is renowned for its breathtaking natural wonders, and this year, one province has emerged as a standout destination.

The mountainous and landlocked province of Apayao, located in the Cordillera region, has been recognized as one of the 11 new UNESCO biosphere reserves for 2024. Spanning 3,960 square kilometers, the province showcases a diverse landscape, divided into two distinct regions: the Upper Apayao, characterized by rugged terrain, peaks, plateaus, and valleys, and the Lower Apayao, known for its flatlands, rolling hills, and plateaus.

Adding to its allure, the Apayao River, stretching 180 kilometers and supported by 18 tributaries, serves as the province’s lifeline. UNESCO highlights the river and other natural features as key contributors to the region’s burgeoning ecotourism industry.

A Nature Lover’s Paradise

Apayao is a treasure trove of natural attractions, perfect for hikers, adventurers, and those seeking tranquility amidst unspoiled beauty. The Department of Tourism-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) describes the province’s dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and serene rivers as an “escape from the modern world.”

Visitors can explore majestic waterfalls across its seven municipalities:

  • Calanasan boasts Carmela Falls.
  • Kabugao offers Gololan Falls.
  • Conner is home to Anito Falls.
  • Flora features the enchanting Pinsal Falls.

Each waterfall offers visitors refreshing waters and lush surroundings that promise serenity and rejuvenation.

For those intrigued by underground wonders, Lussok Crystal Cave and Underground River in Luna is a must-see. The cave, derived from the Ilocano word for “hole,” features awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites, bats, and a crystal-clear underground river that flows into a blue lagoon. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, boating, and hiking in the eco-park nearby.

Another unique attraction is the Dupag Rock Formation in Luna, located on a 30-meter hill in Marag Valley. This maze of wavy, sharp limestone rocks offers panoramic views of the valley for adventurous climbers.

For serious trekkers, Mount Sicapoo in Calanasan offers a challenging trail leading to the stunning Mount Sicapoo Monolith, a towering boulder that points skyward, offering breathtaking vistas.

Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Practices

Apayao is not just about its natural beauty—it is also a bastion of indigenous culture. Visitors can immerse themselves in the traditions of the Isnag people, known for their deep connection to nature and their hospitality. The Isnags uphold the Lapat system, a customary practice that protects natural resources through community regulations led by tribal leaders.

This commitment to sustainability and conservation is a cornerstone of Apayao’s recognition by UNESCO. DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco praised the province’s efforts, calling its inclusion in the UNESCO biosphere reserve list a testament to its ecological significance and conservation initiatives.

Adventures Await

For thrill-seekers, the Tacang Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP) in Sta. Marcela offers exciting activities like ATV rides and kayaking. Meanwhile, the Hutungan Hidden Paradise in Pudtol, with its giant rocks and crystal-clear blue waters, provides an off-the-beaten-path experience that showcases Apayao’s rugged charm.

A Bright Future for Tourism

Apayao’s provincial government actively promotes its attractions, partnering with the Department of Tourism and other stakeholders to position itself as a top destination. Recent initiatives, such as participating in Mangan Taku 2024, a food festival showcasing Cordillera’s delicacies, and winning accolades for the Marag Tourism Village, reflect the province’s dedication to sustainable tourism development.

Joining notable destinations like Albay, Palawan, and Puerto Galera on UNESCO’s prestigious list of biosphere reserves, Apayao offers travelers an opportunity to reconnect with nature and appreciate the value of conservation.

Accessible by a 13-hour land trip from Manila, the best time to visit Apayao is from February to May, during the dry season.
