The Haligi ng Dangal Awards 2024 celebrated the Agwas Bamboo Café as the Interior Design Honoree, recognizing its innovative fusion of modern design with nature. The awards ceremony took place at the historic Metropolitan Theater, showcasing exceptional projects that embody Filipino creativity and sustainable design.
Designed by Interior Designer Sheryl Mariñas, Agwas Bamboo Café skillfully integrates various functions within a compact space and challenging terrain while preserving the natural beauty of its surroundings. The café’s design exemplifies the possibility of achieving functional elegance, even in the face of spatial limitations.
A key element of this achievement is the use of locally sourced bamboo, treated with a natural salt-based solution for enhanced durability and pest resistance. This bamboo was meticulously handcrafted by a dedicated local team, highlighting the importance of Filipino craftsmanship. The emphasis on sustainable materials not only connects the design to the environment but also reinforces the café’s integration within the natural landscape.
In addition to its eco-friendly design, Mariñas prioritized a farm-to-table dining experience by utilizing locally sourced ingredients to craft a menu that aligns with the café’s commitment to sustainability. This approach not only minimizes the environmental footprint but also supports local farmers and producers.
