Iloilo City Sets Sights on Becoming the Philippines’ First Green MICE Destination

Iloilo City is on track to become the Philippines’ first “Green MICE Destination” as it launches the ambitious Green Meets Great campaign, outlined in the city’s 2025 outlook. On October 22, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas, along with his team, presented the campaign aimed at transforming the city into a hub for sustainable Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism.

A Leading MICE Hub in Southeast Asia

As one of the few local government units in the Philippines with an established MICE Office, Iloilo City is positioning itself as a top contender for MICE tourism in Southeast Asia. The city’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure make it a prime destination for hosting large-scale events and conferences. According to the Department of Tourism, the city welcomed 752,301 tourists in 2022, increasing to 886,283 in 2023. Iloilo’s recognition as a Clean Tourist City by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) further strengthens its reputation as a sustainable travel destination.

In addition, Iloilo City was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2023, highlighting its rich culinary heritage and potential to attract food-focused events as part of its MICE offerings.

The Green Meets Great Campaign

The Green Meets Great campaign is central to Iloilo City’s vision of becoming a livable, sustainable, and highly urbanized city, with a focus on providing eco-friendly MICE options. Key initiatives include accrediting establishments that adopt solar energy, promoting energy-saving practices in government buildings and accommodations, and implementing waste management protocols, particularly in streets and public spaces.

Another focus of the campaign is sustainable tourism mobility. Iloilo City’s bikeable city plan, which won the Gold Award for Most Bicycle-Friendly City, will play a crucial role in offering eco-friendly transportation options for visitors and event participants.

A Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Iloilo City’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond infrastructure. The city is pushing for a paperless and cashless system, from event registrations to market transactions, and has implemented strict policies like the no-smoking ordinance and the use of compostable materials at all events, banning styrofoam and plastic.

The campaign also encourages local stakeholders to adopt renewable energy. In May 2024, the Department of Energy (DOE) recognized Iloilo City for the success of its Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign, promoting the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) and other voluntary renewable energy initiatives.

Gastronomy and Innovation at the Forefront

In recognition of its innovative local growth projects, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) awarded Iloilo City a PHP2-million grant under the Lunsod Lunsad Project in August 2024. This grant supports the Iloilo City Creative Gastronomy Mapping and Strategy Development, which will showcase the city’s vibrant food scene and enhance its appeal as a MICE destination. The comprehensive mapping project aims to position Iloilo City as a culinary hotspot for both local and international visitors.

Join the Green Movement

With Iloilo City’s progressive efforts toward becoming the Philippines’ first green MICE destination, it’s an exciting time for stakeholders and tourists alike to engage in its sustainable tourism and innovative growth initiatives.
