SM City Baguio’s Rainwater Treatment Facility: A Blueprint for Sustainable Water Solutions

SM City Baguio has taken a major step towards water conservation with the introduction of its cutting-edge rainwater treatment facility (RTF), which was launched in July 2023. In just a few months, the facility has successfully processed over 17,111.80 cubic meters of rainwater—equivalent to the volume of 7 Olympic-sized swimming pools or more than 6,800 standard water tankers. This treated rainwater is now being used as potable water for the mall’s daily operations and by its lessees, reinforcing SM’s commitment to sustainable water management.

SM City Baguio’s groundbreaking rainwater treatment facility has treated over 17,000 cubic meters of rainwater into drinkable water.

This initiative enhances the mall’s water supply from the Baguio Water District and plays a vital role in boosting the city’s water security while ensuring the well-being of its residents. Located in the mall’s basement, the rainwater treatment facility (RTF) now provides 30% of the mall’s total monthly clean water needs, which is safe for consumption and food preparation.

“There is a critical need for reliable and safe water sources,” stated Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong. “SM City Baguio’s rainwater treatment facility is a commendable project that directly addresses this issue. We encourage other private establishments to adopt similar efforts to efficiently manage our water resources.”

The RTF uses a precise six-step treatment process, with real-time monitoring of equipment and performance parameters to ensure maximum efficiency. The processed water undergoes routine testing by the city’s accredited laboratory and consistently meets all potability standards.

The rainwater treatment facility (RTF) of SM City Baguio utilizes a rigorous six-step treatment process with real-time monitoring, ensuring processed water always adheres to potability requirements.

“This facility exemplifies SM Prime Holdings’ dedication to sustainable operations and the well-being of the communities we serve,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls’ Vice President and Head of Sustainability and Resilience. “By harnessing and treating rainwater, we are not only reducing our dependence on the city’s water supply but also helping create a healthier and more resilient Baguio City.”

The reach of the rainwater treatment facility (RTF) goes beyond the mall’s operations. By lessening the strain on the city’s water supply, more water haulers can now serve additional households, especially during periods of water shortages that Baguio frequently faces.

SM City Baguio’s RTF serves as a model of how businesses can address pressing community needs through innovative, sustainable solutions. SM Prime continues its commitment to being a driving force for economic growth, delivering forward-thinking and sustainable urban developments, enriching the lives of millions. The company remains focused on building the sustainable cities of tomorrow through integrated property development.
