AXEAN Festival Heads to Bali for Its Next Musical Adventure

The inaugural event unveils its initial round of programming, which includes the addition of a songwriting camp

Following two successful years in Singapore, AXEAN Festival is set to make a splash in a new tropical paradise—Bali, Indonesia. This year’s international music festival, taking place from September 28-29, 2024, will feature a stellar lineup of Filipino artists, including R&B sensation Maki, indie-folk group Munimuni, electronic producer crwn, dream-pop band bird., and soul-jazz vocalist Muri.

The festival will be hosted at the picturesque Jimbaran Hub on the southern tip of Bali, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning sunset views.

A New Tropical Destination

“Our vision for AXEAN has always been to create a regional traveling festival, rotating through different host countries or having multiple smaller editions,” says Piyapong Muenprasertdee, AXEAN Festival co-founder and team leader. “We noticed that many Southeast Asian music markets are either very domestic or primarily receptive to Western and K-pop artists. By helping domestic artists cross borders within the region, we hope to expand their international fanbase. After two years in Singapore, Bali’s vibrant music scene and tropical appeal make it an ideal new location.”

The festival will kick off with a music industry mixer and a private showcase featuring Balinese talent the day before the main event. Over the course of two days, the festival will include a music conference with networking opportunities and a showcase featuring over 50 acts from Southeast Asia and beyond.

International Songwriting Camp

The festival will conclude with a private songwriting camp, the newest addition to its program. This initiative aims to encourage creativity and cross-cultural collaboration among top songwriters, producers, and artists from the ASEAN region and beyond.

David Siow, AXEAN Festival co-founder and co-director, highlights the DIY approach of the songwriting camp. “Our goal is to empower artists and connect them with a global community, ensuring fair opportunities and outcomes from these collaborative sessions.”

Muenprasertdee adds that the songwriting camp is designed to break barriers and foster strategic collaborations, helping artists enter new markets and expand their fanbases. Recent success stories include collaborations between Flower.far from Thailand and Fern. from the Philippines, as well as Vũ Thanh Vân from Vietnam and H 3 F from Thailand.

“We’re excited to create an environment that fosters artistic collaborations and new music. We’ve also invited alumni and guest songwriters to make the camp even more dynamic. Look out for new music emerging from this creative endeavor!”
