Canon Introduces the EOS R1: A Game-Changer in Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

Canon Marketing Philippines, Inc. has unveiled the EOS R1, a groundbreaking full-frame mirrorless camera and the first flagship model of the EOS R system. With advanced image processing and autofocus systems, the EOS R1 is setting new standards for speed and performance in the digital era.

“Canon’s top-of-the-line ‘1 series’ professional cameras have supported users for over 50 years, evolving to stay at the forefront of needs and technological advancements. The EOS R1 carries this legacy into a new era, empowering users to elevate their visual expression,” said Ichinomiya Takashi, Director of Regional ICB Sales & Marketing Division, Canon Singapore.

Top-Notch Speed: Accelerated Capture Image Processing

The EOS R1 features a 24-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, which can elevate images to an impressive 96-megapixels using Canon’s unique In-Camera Upscaling technology. The sensor’s improved light efficiency and faster readout enable the camera’s revolutionary capabilities.

With the Accelerated Capture image processing system, featuring the innovative DIGIC Accelerator alongside DIGIC X, the EOS R1 offers unprecedented processing speed and power. Deep learning algorithms enable detailed scene analysis, enhancing autofocus and subject tracking performance. The camera supports fast-paced workflows with in-camera features like Upscaling and Neural Network Noise Reduction, ensuring swift delivery of high-quality, publication-ready images.

Capture Decisive Moments: Smarter Subject Detection and Tracking

The EOS R1 introduces the next-generation Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system. Leveraging the Accelerated Capture image processing system’s powerful capabilities, it surpasses the AF and subject detection performance of the EOS R3.

A new AF feature, Action Priority AF mode, detects crucial actions specific to sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Using deep learning, the camera analyzes ball position, players’ joints, and the presence of multiple people, automatically switching the AF frame to capture decisive moments during fast-paced games.

The Register People Priority feature allows the camera to prioritize up to 10 specific preregistered individuals, maintaining focus on them even when their faces are side-facing. Improved AF and subject tracking in People, Animal, and Vehicle-priority modes benefit from Cross-type AF, enhancing the camera’s ability to detect small subjects and those affected by patterns or horizontal lines.

In-Camera Upscaling: Instant High-Resolution Crops

The new In-Camera Upscaling function uses deep learning algorithms to quadruple the pixel count in an image while preserving details and quality, achieving results akin to a 96-megapixel camera. This feature is ideal for high-quality extreme crops on the spot, ready for immediate press office delivery.

To address image noise in magnified images, the in-camera Neural Network Noise Reduction function uses deep learning-based algorithms to reduce noise in RAW images, producing clean high ISO JPEG images straight from the camera.

Enhanced Stability and High-Speed Shooting

The EOS R1 features a 5-axis In-Body IS (Image Stabilizer) with a newly designed mechanism and improved algorithms, offering up to 8.5 stops of image stabilization with compatible RF lenses. The camera can shoot high-speed bursts at up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter and 12 fps with the mechanical and electronic first-curtain shutter, reducing rolling shutter distortion to negligible levels.

Pre-continuous shooting for stills and pre-recording for videos capture moments before the shutter is pressed, ensuring no crucial moment is missed. The pre-recording function captures up to 20 frames before the shutter button is fully pressed and can record up to 5 seconds before video recording starts.

Seamless Operation on the Field

Designed for seamless control, the EOS R1 features improved Eye Control AF, allowing users to control the AF frame with their eyes using enhanced line-of-sight optics and detection algorithms. The 9.44 million-dot, 0.9x magnification blackout-free EVF offers the highest definition and magnification in the EOS series, providing a large, bright, and clear view of the subject.

Several new design and interface features provide more shortcuts for instant recall of stored AF settings, allowing for faster user response to changing shooting conditions. These improvements ensure the EOS R1 delivers a superior shooting experience, whether in fast-paced action or controlled studio environments.

  • Focus preset, a function previously available only on super telephoto lenses that enables any camera button to be assigned to set the focus to a predetermined focus position so users can set focus instantly on a desired area.
  • 2-level AF-On button functionality, where the AF-On button can be assigned to change different settings when half-pressed and fully pressed.
  • Ability to register and recall different AF settings for different activities and shooting situations preregistered by the user.

Canon has announced the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera that is redefining speed and performance. The EOS R1 features two CFexpress Type-B slots, supporting high-speed recording of data-intensive files such as 6K 60p RAW videos and 40 fps full-resolution burst images. Users can record to either card, with the second card available for simultaneously recording still images and proxy video files.

The dual shooting function allows for simultaneous recording of Full HD 60p videos and 16:9 JPEG still images at approximately 17.8 megapixels. This feature enhances efficiency in situations like breaking news or interviews where both stills and videos are required.

Lightweight and Durable Build

Constructed with a lightweight yet strong magnesium alloy exterior, the EOS R1 is 23% lighter and 11% smaller than the EOS-1D X Mark III. Despite its reduced size, the camera maintains an impact-resistant build with dust- and water-resistant weather-sealing, designed to withstand extreme conditions.

Designed for Swift Editorial Workflows

The EOS R1 is the first EOS system camera to support the new Wi-Fi 6/6E wireless protocol, alongside existing 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands, enabling faster wireless file transmission to smartphones, PCs, or FTP/FTPS/SFTP servers. It also supports the high-speed 2.5GBase-T wired LAN protocol, in addition to existing wired LAN support. These advanced communication standards allow users to swiftly transmit large volumes of still photos and videos to editors, a crucial advantage for timely news reporting.
