Rex Orange County has announced his new album, The Alexander Technique, set for release on September 6th via RCA Records. The album is entirely produced by Rex himself, alongside Teo Halm (known for work with Rosalía, SZA, Beyoncé) and Jim Reed, a longtime member of Rex’s touring band. Additionally, James Blake both produced and features on the track “Look Me In The Eyes.”
To mark the announcement, Rex is releasing two new singles with music videos, “Alexander” and “Guitar Song,” which showcase different facets of the album. The music video for “Alexander,” directed by Nick Walker, introduces the inspiration behind the album’s title, while “Guitar Song” features footage of Rex at Decoy Studios in England, filmed by Alexandra Waespi during the album’s creation.
The album’s title, The Alexander Technique, is inspired by a therapeutic practice that treats back pain to address deeper health issues. This concept mirrors Rex’s approach to his music on this album, which is his most raw and confessional work to date. He strips back his sound to a blend of stream-of-consciousness R&B and indie-folk, while retaining his signature orchestral richness. This album marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career, where he lays everything bare, no matter how painful.
“The Alexander Technique is very much a look into my own brain and experiences over the last few years – it’s almost a diary,” Rex explains. The album, longer and more musically varied than any of his previous projects, was created over several years, beginning before and concluding after his 2022 release, WHO CARES?. Listening to it feels like watching an artist grow in real-time, facing all the associated growing pains. “I’ve made a lot of love songs over the years, and I feel as though this is the first time I’m trying to make a project about everything in life. In my mind, it’s exactly what I’ve always wanted to make.”
