Featuring Sena Nakajima, Daiken Okudaira, and “One Piece” star Mackenyu, this boundary-pushing new Japanese Original series tells an epic story set across two different worlds and visual mediums
In the upcoming groundbreaking Japanese Original series “Dragons of Wonderhatch,” a captivating saga unfolds when an exile from a crumbling anime realm filled with dragons crosses paths with a misfit from the “real world.” This extraordinary series is set to debut exclusively on Disney+ on December 20.
Nagi, born in our “real world” with sound-color synesthesia—a unique ability that lets her see colors in response to certain sounds—has perpetually felt like an outsider. She has yearned for the chance to soar through the skies, and her destiny will soon intertwine with Thaim, another outsider from a distinct realm. Thaim hails from Upananta, where he has long been ostracized due to his inability to hear the voices of the animated land’s resident dragons.
As the floating islands of Upananta gradually begin to plummet from the heavens, these two misfits embark on an extraordinary adventure that spans both the live-action and anime worlds in “Dragons of Wonderhatch,” arriving this December exclusively on Disney+.
The series features Sena Nakajima (known for “We Are Little Zombies”) as Nagi, a high school student from the “real world”; Daiken Okudaira (acclaimed for “Nemesis” and “Mother”) as Thaim, a dragon rider from Upananta; and Mackenyu (renowned for “One Piece”) as the heroic dragon rider Aktha. “Dragons of Wonderhatch” is helmed by live-action director Kentaro Hagiwara and animation director Takashi Otsuka, produced by Production I.G (notable for “Ghost in the Shell”), and showcases the breathtaking artistry of world-renowned art director Chie Morimoto and character designer Posuka Demizu.
Enthusiasts of exceptional Japanese storytelling can subscribe to Disney+ today for immediate access to captivating narratives, including “Gannibal,” a live-action tale of a police officer unraveling a horrifying secret in his tranquil Japanese village, and “Phoenix: Eden 17,” an anime story about two lovers who escape Earth in pursuit of a better life on a distant planet, only to find their new home more nightmarish than they could have imagined. Disney+ also offers an extensive library of entertainment from across APAC and around the globe.
